Babies: 0 - 3 Months

FF do come in! Feeding question..How often?

Do you feed LO on demand? The hospital told me every 2-3 hrs she should be eating..

DD naps for 2.5-3hrs usually then wakes to eat..sometimes at night shell wake an hour and a half and start rooting/fussing.. I dont want to overfeed her..I try to see if she'll go back to sleep or can be calmed before I feed her during these times..

I've heard mixed theories..that babies eat when hungry and cant be overfed then heard otherwise as well...

  • I feed my LO every 2-3 hours. Usually if she is napping, she'll start to stir and wake up at that point anyway.  If she really is crying/fussy we will go earlier than that, but she seems to wake up or get cranky just about the time when we are ready to feed her.

Just saw the similar post below..:) way to go *high fives self*
  • I would go ahead and feed her.  If you notice a lot of spit up then you may be overfeeding.  But my LO sometimes wants to eat every hour but then waits 5 hours sometimes.

  • We've always fed DD on demand. This is what her pedi told us to do. When she's hungry she'll get fussy and start rooting and sticking her hands in her mouth. When she was just home from the hospital, we were feeding every 2-3hrs and now that she's 12 weeks old it's every 3-5hrs.

  • I had read that you could over feed them but our pedi said you can't and to feed on demand. LO usually eats every 3 hours but yesterday was getting fussy 2 hours after eating so I fed her and she was gulping it down so fast and was content afterwards so I know she was definitely hungry. I say feed on demand. I also heard there are certain times of day LO might want to eat more.
  • I feed on demand. Sometimes it's at regular intervals, sometimes it's sooner (or later) than normal.

I don't know how a baby can be overfed. The few times it happened with DD, she puked up the excess.
