Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Breast Milk question

Originally I was supplementing with formula, especially in the beginning when I wasn't producing as much milk and she wasn't gaining weight. However, in the past couple of weeks I'm able to pump at least 3-4 oz as long as I do it every 4hrs which I've been doing (if anything less than that time period I produce less). My baby is an eater and will take the 4oz easily

I nursed LO this AM and tried to give her an additional 2oz of formula b/c its hard to judge how much she is getting from me and projectile formula spewed out of her nose, so I'd imagine she got enough BM from me! i know she has big eyes and sometimes thinks she can handle more than she can.

Currently, from yesterday I have enough BM in the fridge for all the day feedings today. If I'm giving her BM only, are there any supplements she should be taking? I keep reading about vitamin D. Is she getting all the vitamins and minerals she needs from me? I also know I need to eat more fruit and veggies so I'll make sure I do that. I'm going to call the Pedi on Tues to ask what they think now that I have more BM to give her vs. the formula.

I actually much rather pump than nurse. I only nurse really in the middle of the night and/or I'm at my parents and I can't pump.

Thanks!

  • Yep, we were told that if she isn't getting any formula (or less than 12 oz a day) then we needed to start a Vitamin D supplement.

  • I was told by my LC that as long as I was taking prenatals, baby would be getting the vitamins/nutrients needed...

This.  Our pedi said she doesn't need supplements if I'm taking PNVs.

I heard about the vitamin d as well..And thats why DD's jaundice went way up when she was a few days old..Wasnt getting the Vitamin D from me I suppose.

Also on the formula projectile thing..I was told if vomit is not just spit up but actual projectile it could be allergies.. It also may be she ate too much (I know DD spit up a lot once due to eating more than she could handle) but I'd look out for that as well..

  • My pedi had me wait until 1 month and then put the baby on a multivitamin.  This is a question for your pediatrician.
  • I just make sure DS has exposure to sunlight each day to get his Vit D.

  • Our pedi gave us vitamin D drops to give our LO daily in addition to my breastmilk.
