Those who don't swaddle...

... how do you sleep your LO?? DS seems to like to have his arms free now. We keep our thermostat at 68 degrees, and we keep a fan on during the night as well (because it seems to be a little warmer upstairs, and because DH and both sleep extremely warm). The past couple of nights I've slept DS in his footie PJs, and then covering him from the waist down with a blanket. When he gets up to eat at 4am, his cheeks and hands are FREEZING cold. He doesn't wake up and cry or anything, so I'm assuming he's not uncomfortable, but I'm still afraid he might be too cold. (I'm more afraid of overheating him though.) What do you think??

Thanks, ladies!! :)

  • Our LO wears one piece footy jammies...and sleeps with her arms up.  We just put the blanket so its not loose around her from her armpits down or mid stomach down, but not swaddled.  She doesnt ever feel cold to me for night feedings. I'll be interested to see what other people do.

  • DS likes to have his hands free as well. So we dress him in a long sleeve sleep gown, the ones with elastic at the bottom. and then a halo sleep sack. We have our AC set at 76 overnight and then have a ceiling fan going. He seems comfy and not to hot.
  • We keep our house at 69, DD sleeps in either a onsie and a sleep sack or a night gown with a blanket up to about her mid belly..

  • Onesie and a sleep sack.  I pull her hands in the sleeves of the sleep sack a little so they are not cold.  She hates to be cold, but also does not love the swaddle.  And I'm all about swaddling - did it with my other two.  But that's not what worked for this one.
  • You could try using socks or mittens over the hands if the pjs do not have the fold overs. A hat can really help regulate temp as well. I swaddle dd but with her arms out so the blanket is snug around her chest/belly
  • DS either wears a sleeper or a sleep sack with a onesie and socks on underneath.

This is what we do too. When it was still really cold out we would put mittens on him but his hands & face seem to be warm enough now.

  • If your using a bassinet, which im assuming you are try draping a blanket over the opening. We have a side reach one and I would imagine this would work for you too, I think that with our overhead fan that the draft at night could make him cold so we put a blanket over the opening a little bit so its darker and he gets less of a breeze in there; but we put him to sleep like you with a blanket below his waist and his hands are free and we tuck the blanket into and under the bassinet mattress and he never seems cold. If that doesnt work maybe increase the temperature on your thermostat so it gets warmer then 68 degrees because thats pretty chilly.

This is pretty much was we do as well.  DD HATES being swaddled and will fight it until she's blue in the face.

  • On colder nights DS sleeps in the long sleeve footed pj's with the mittens folded over and a blanket pulled up to his waist.
  • We sleep with it at 72.  We swaddle her as long as her swaddle sacs aren't dirty from being peed on.  Otherwise we put her in a longsleeved gown, and fold down the sleeves onto her hands, this is nice because her hands stay warm this way.
  • Instead of the loose blanket, you should try a Halo sleepsack.  Not only are they so much safer then loose blankets (loose blanket are a SIDS risk), but it will actually stay on him all night long.  When my now 3yr son was done being swaddled, we switched him to halo sleepsacks, and that's the plan with ds2.  They come in cotton or fleece, and then you can dress him in the appropriate layers underneath.
