Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Anyone else's LO act like this?

After eating, G seems uncomfortable- I know it may be gas, but when K had gas, she would scream. He also spits up after virtually every meal, sometimes more than once. Now and then it's a lot, but it's never projectile like acid reflux- but could it be reflux? He just moans and grunts and whines some after meals. It seems like something more than typical newborn behavior, but I'm not really sure what it could be. Thoughts?

At his next appt, I'm going to make sure the pedi observes him right after he eats so she can see, but until then I'm looking for your opinion. Thanks. :)

  • DS had (has) horrible gas and never screamed. He was on Similac Advance and we switched to Similac Sensitive - worked wonders. He still has gas occasionally but it's not nearly as bad as before. He was super uncomfortable - grunting, arching back, yelling out on occasion.

Do you BF? If not, maybe a formula switch is needed?

FWIW - we used Mylicon to help with the gas, which a lot of people here recommend, but for us it was no help - ended up causing him to be constipated and in a lot of pain. It works for some though, so if you use it just be aware of that!

  • Could be your LO is just entering the colicy stage that most babies get.  Babies can spit up/throw up after every meal, even be projectile and not have it be reflux.  My doc told me her first kid would projectile spit up after every meal and it wasn't reflux.  She was told by her pedi (she was in med school at the time) that it was normal and her daughter would grow out of it by 10 months.

My DS is very gassy, will spit up a couple of ounces of food after meals sometimes, and will fuss and complain after meals too.  What we've done is to burp him lots.  I'll burp him sometimes in the middle of feedings if it seems that he's swallowed a lot of air.  We switch around burping positions too to make sure we get it all out.

  • DS is a very gassy baby too. He tends to try to breathe while eating (we ff). I've noticed that when milk starts leaking from his mouth, it's time to burp him. I think we have at least one burping session per ounce of formula. Since we started that two days ago, he's been fine. While we were in the hospital, he'd just arch his back and scream.
