Babies: 0 - 3 Months

days and nights are all mixed up

LO is 9 days old now, and I know it will take some time, but just wondering how long it took you ladies before LO figured out day from night. She's so sleepy during the day and it's all I can do to get her up every 2 hours to feed, but at night she's up like clockwork and won't settle down....how long will this last?!

Re: days and nights are all mixed up

  • Our baby is 9 days old too. He is hungry every 2 hours, unless he sleeps longer. Sometimes he will sleep 3-4 hours. Maybe once or twice a day he will be awake from 1-2 hours. At night time, he'll fall back asleep after a feeding, like most of his feedings. I'm not really sure they know night from day anytime soon..

  • They all kind of start out like this. We have been lucky with dd#2 and have so far avoided it (knocking on wood). During the day I would let her nap/sleep as much as she wants, but have her sleep in the living room and expose her to daytime noise and light. She would wake every 2 hours on her own to nurse and sleeps in long stretches at night. I wouldn't force her to stay awake (that was the mistake I think we made with dd#1) because strangely enough, the more they sleep during the day, the better they sleep at night. Sleep begets sleep.

  • I'd definitely let her nap as much as possible in bright, sunny, common areas of the house during the day.  Wake to feed at least every 3 hours.  Don't swaddle.  At night keep her in a very dark place, swaddled.  Use a dim light or a nightlight for diaper changes so it stays very low key.  Do not engage her at night, just do what you need to do to feed and calm her.

  • My LO is the same way. Thank God for Grandmas! She takes the night shift and lets me sleep. Does anyone know how long this lasts?
