Potty Training

Did anyone skip the potty chair and go straight to potty training on the toilet?

I have a seat for E that sits on the toilet, but I wonder if she might become more interested if she had her own potty chair.

Thanks!

Re: Potty Training

  • We did.

We really never used a potty chair at all.  We had one, but eventually discarded it.

We briefly used the seat on top of the seat, but since we were training a 3yo she really didn't need it.  She quickly learned how to manage the big potty all on her own.

We're working on potty training our 27-month-old and she mimics what big sister does.  We're just training her on the regular potty.  She needs help getting on but can get off by herself and she can sit surprisingly well without assistance.  IMO the reason she's so interested is because she's the second child.

If you're talking about the small little toilet that you have to clean afterwards...then we didn't use it.  We got the bjorn toilet seat that fits on the toilet and I also bought the portable toilet seat and chair for traveling and kept it in the car.  Throwing a disposable bag away from the travel one doesn't gross me out as the one that you keep at home.

DD trained on a potty seat, not the potty chair. We did end up using one because her MDO room didn't have a real potty for kids. But we're back to just using the seat now... except that I carry the potty chair in my car.

Oh, and we got a toilet seat with a a built in potty seat at home depot for about $30-35. DD thinks it's the coolest thing ever even though she can use the regular toilet seat just fine she raves about how it's "just my size" and explains to me how she can't fall in.

This was us with Hannah, except we used a potty chair at first, then switched to the seat top, then to the regular toilet seat.  Of course we've been working on potty training for over a year now, and she's still struggling.  She never tells me she has to go, and I forget to ask at least once a day (mommy brain), so she still has accidents all the time.  It's exhausting.

So looking back at my experience, maybe you should just choose one and stick wtih it?  btw, we have a stool in front of the toilet so she can get on by herself.
