Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Acts like he is still hungry, but I've got nothing left to give :-(

I nursed ds (on both sides) before I put him to bed tonight. He nursed for approx. 10 minutes on each side and even spit me out on the second side. When I burped him, he even spit up a little (proving that he was most definitely full). Well, I have put him down 3 times now. The second time, I rocked him with the pacifier and he fell asleep within minutes (even spit it out), but after I put him back down, he was up 5 minutes later. Rooting on my shoulder. I then just put him down again with the paci and I haven't heard anything from him yet.

He can't still be hungry! He did burp again when I picked him up the 2nd time. Maybe his tummy hurts. Poor guy. It's so hard when they can't really "tell" you what is wrong.

  • If he burped, he may have made some room for more :)

  • are you sure you're empty? 10 minutes on each side wouldn't empty me ( i realize different people have different supply levels)
  • I feel like anytime I say "he can't be hungry again"...he is!  I got home with DS at 4:30 today, nursed at 5, then again at 7 and again at 8:30.  :)

  • DS downed two of his  normal bottles of BM before falling asleep tonight. It took me awhile before I finally accepted that he was  actually hungry.

  • sometimes when they nurse like that, its b/c they are boosting up your milk supply to prep for a growth spurt. I advise let him nurse for no more than an hour and if he is still going for more, top him off with a bottle of EBM if you have it. This is what I am doing and I find he does this every few days. Like he would would nurse for long periods for two nights, then be fine for three nights, then start the cycle all over again. Hope this helps! Good Luck!
  • He got up for a 4th time and I nursed him. He gulped for a few seconds, so I must have had some left. He fell asleep and I put him down, but he was back up within minutes. I then nursed him on the other side, but he acted like he didn't even want it and barely even sucked. Fell asleep again, so I just put him back down. This is #5 now. What is going on with him? I have no idea what to do if he gets up again. I guess I'll change him and then rock him. UGH!
  • My DS does this if he just wants to be held. He's a little cuddle bug.

This sounds exactly like cluster feeding.  He is telling your body to make more (probably in preparation for a growth spurt).  I would just keep feeding him as long as he is acting hungry and latching happily.

  • Sounds like cluster feeding.  The 6 week growth spurt maybe.  One night when DD was doing that and kept detaching because she wasn't getting any/enough she was really frustrated.  I was fine with her sucking when I didn't have any, because it would tell my body to make more, but she wasn't fine with it, she wanted milk now.  So I had DH give her a bottle of breast milk while I pumped to tell my body to make more for the growth spurt.  It worked that time, she drank it all and went to sleep.
  • My little man has been doing this too. I've had to give him a bottle and then let him continue on my boobs to tell them to make more. He's been doing this for a couple days - I've had to INCREASE supplementing him from 1 2 oz bottle (which I was about to stop altogether) to 2 or 3 bottles in the past 2 days. I'm so worried about my supply since I've been having issues to begin with. Ugh. I have to stop thinking about it so much because stress isn't good for supply either!
