Hard to burp LOs? Tips?

My dd is breastfed but is sooo hard to get a burp out.  This is our second so it isn't like we are being way to gentle like ppl do with their first.  We try on our shoulder or sitting up resting her against our handand burping with the other.  Seems she only burps when we move her around-like pass her back and forth or change her position.  Any tips?  New positions?  Anyone else have a hard time getting burps out?  She gets gassy on the other end and isn't so unhappy... not sure if we have a big issue or not..

  • I've been wondering the same thing! ::waits to read answers:: I have a really hard time burping LO sometimes. Last night I got some great ones, but the last time I fed her I got nothing.

My pediatrician said as long as she's not in pain from gas, don't worry about it too much. I still try everytime but if I don't get anything out of her, I don't worry if she doesn't.

You can try lying LO on their belly across your knees and rubbing/patting their  back.  It puts a little extra pressure on their tummy that helps the bubbles get out :)

  • I'll try all the normal positions first and if I still don't get a burp,  I just lay DD down on her back for a minute or two, then put her over my shoulder and pat her back as I walk around. Usually within a minute she will let out a belch.
  • I have the same issue.  And she isn't my first child either.  I've tried all the tricks and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  But my DD gets really gassy and uncomfortable.  Or she vomits all over me.  The frequent changing of positions is what sometimes works for us also.  Sorry, not helpful.  Just empathetic...

This is what we have to do with Dylan. I figure whatever works, do. I usually "stand" him up and scrunch him down. You don't have to be forceful and it works for us. But, usually LO is an awesome belcher he could put grown men to shame.

  • We cannot ever get a burp out of DS sitting upright.  We usually have to lay down or lay at an angle with him on our chest and patting his back.  Usually he'll fall asleep in the middle of a burping session, so we'll go and change his diaper which will wake him up and then he'll usually burp as soon as I get him off the changing table.

I do this too. It helps. I read (but it could be wrong) that BF babies don't have as much bubbles as bottle fed. I still try to burp her after each boob/feeding. If she doesn't burp, I just go one. If she has gas, she will let us know!

  • Our LO is tough to burp, too. Daddy is really good at getting them out. Part of it for us is patience. It seems like just when I'm about to give up, he'll let out a giant burp.

I usually start with him in a sitting up position. I pat his back firmly for a minute or two; if no burps, then I slowly lean him back till he's laying down and then slowly sit him back up and resume the patting. I do this a few times. If that doesn't work, then we walk & bounce while holding him pretty tightly to put some pressure on his belly.

If those things don't work, then I give him to Daddy! I'm not sure what his secret is, but he's good!

  • My LO was soo hard and I did so many different ways but the only thing that has always worked for him is from the baby whisperer and you rub his back with the 4 fingers together upwards and your thumb is under on his stomach. It makes a "c" and do upward motions and works everytime! also if he still seems fussy, I lay him on my legs and bounce and sway him on his stomach

  • I stand up and walk around with her on my shoulder, it always works. Also will always get some huge ones going up or down the stairs, I guess the bouncing gets the burps out!
