Getting baby on a consistant schedule??

Can anyone recommend a gook book on how to get baby into a consistent  sleeping/eating pattern?  There are days when I think I have got him on a 3 hr sleep/3 oz schedule, but then he changes it up - he is only 1 month old.  I realize he may be too young to get into a pattern, but I am honestly not sure.  Thx!

  • Regardless of what a book may say a newborn will follow their own schedule.

  • He is too young still.  Especially for day time.

But I'll tell you what we do at night, it has seemed to help with sleep...  When LO gets sleepy around 8, we start our night time routine (read a couple of kid books, nurse, rock to sleep).  At the beginning he would next wake up at 10, but it's progressed to 2, then 4, now about 5 am.  (Only started STTN this week though, keeping my fingers crossed it lasts)  He'll generally go back to sleep after he is changed and nurses but not always.  If he wants to stay awake and play that's okay with me - but we stay in the bedroom until 7 that way he knows it's still "down time".

Babies like routine, so if you can I would try to make each day similar to the last.  Keep play time and errands in the same order if possible, but let LO nap and eat when LO wants to.  HTH.

I would just add that I agree with the pps that a consistent schedule at that age (and for some babies, the first 3 months!) is unlikely but it cant hurt to start a routine (even if it is a loose one).

The Baby Whisperer recommends an Eat, Activity, Sleep, You routine (EASY) and offers a lot of good suggestions that have worked really well for us.

  • 1 month is way too early for a "schedule", IMO. They need to eat/sleep "on demand" for the first few months.

  • I really like the Baby Whisperer books, too!  We've been doing the Eat, Sleep, Awake routine since week 2 and it's worked great for us!  I know of people who've started the routine later and realized that they were feeding their babies when they were actually sleepy or vice versa.  I think the Baby Whisperer helps you understand what your baby needs.  I really suggest it.
