Come in if LO had a blocked tear duct

LO has had eye discharge since he was born. For the first 2 weeks or so it was only one eye. I assumed it was a blocked tear duct. Now it's both eyes. The discharge has gotten a lot worse and his eyes are bloodshot sporadically. I've been cleaning off the discharge with a warm wash cloth. I tried putting a drop of breast milk in his eyes too. It hasn't gotten any better. Does this sound like your LO when s/he had a blocked duct or should I put a call in to the pedi?

  • DD has had a clogged tear duct since she was 4 days old. Pedi told us to call if her eye got red.

It took a while for my DD's eyes to completely clear up but they were never bloodshot.  My Pedi told me that as long as the eyeball wasn't red, it was fine...so you might want to call.

  • My LO has a blocked tear duct, has had it since the hospital and it's just now clearing up. Her eye fills with yellow goo, and sometimes clear goo. Pedi said to massage the tear duct with a warm washcloth, and then wipe the eye with another clean washcloth. Her eyes never look blood shot though. What color is the discharge?

  • DD has a blocked tear duct since birth.  A couple of weeks ago her eye got very red and it was closed shut with gunk (like pink eye).  We went to the pedi and she said that it was a secondary infection becasue of the tear duct and prescribed antibiotic drops.  She said it was likely to come back, too.  I didn't use the drops because it went away on its own.
  • Call your pedi.  It is probably infected.

My LO was just prescribed eye ointment for an infection caused by a blocked duct.

  • If LO has red eyes, bloodshot eyes, then you should call your pedi. Try massaging from the inside corner of the eye towards the nose. That's helped Adi's eye...the pedi gave an eye drop, but we haven't needed it yet, since the massaging worked. HTH!

  • My daughter has a blocked tearduct. Our doctor said that if it was red and blood shot it would be an infection. Youmight want to call your pedi.
  • Pedi told us to call if the sclera got red.
  • I just called the pedi and I'll go in this afternoon. Thank you!! I thought it was abnormal but I didn't want to sound like an overzealous new mom.
  • LO's blocked duct was like pinkeye minus the bloodshot red color. the drainage was gooey and yellow. pedi told us to rub the side of her nose (the same side as the draining eye) to help unclog the duct. it worked.
