Don't want to co-sleep!

My LO hates his bassinet (Pack&Play).  He'll hang out in there and watch his mobile and listen to the music, but will not sleep in there at night.  I'll even get him asleep and gently put him in there, and he wakes up.  I hate co sleeping and really want him to start sleeping on his own.  I've tried swaddling and that doesn't help.  Any suggestions?  PLEASE!

  • Why don't you put him in his crib? Maybe put a sleep support in there to assure he doesn't roll over and what not.

It's on the other side of the house and I think it's too far away at this point.

Yeah-he screams until he gets his hands out every time he is swaddled too!

  • When I had DD I would put a heating pad in her crib to warm up the space she slept and remove it just before putting her down to sleep. Seemed to work. She also preferred to sleep on her side rather then her back. She wasn't a great sleeper in the very beginning but as soon as I did these two things she slept through the night (she was 2months old. Could have been a coincidence I guess)

  • How long after he falls asleep are you putting him down? I am really impatient so I would always put him down too soon. DH had to do it because he was willing to wait until LO was in a deep sleep. Now he puts himself to sleep!!

Agh sorry, I just saw the age of your LO. Sorry. Do you have a PnP? Where does he normally nap?

It's ok!  Yeah it's his PnP that we are using in our room that he won't sleep in.  He naps in his little lamb seat and LOVES it!

  • We have a Fisher Price Seahorse that plays lullaby music. When we put her down in her PnP, we turn that on and it usually keeps her quiet. I usually have to re-start it about 3 times until she's quiet enough to fall asleep on her own. Maybe something like that would help?

Have you tried a White noise CD or a sound machine? It helped with my older LOs when other things didn't.

  • I was told to do the hand test if you pick up his hand and it drops it's safe to lay him down he shouldn't wake up. If it doesn't he still isn't fully asleep yet.

This is what I try to do. I have to be patient because sometimes I am too anxious to get stuff done when he is finally asleep. I move him a little bit to make sure he doesn't do the startle reflex - that is when I know he is really asleep. I then swaddle him if needed & lay him down. He only recently started needing to be swaddled so he doesn't startle himself awake (he has been doing this a lot lately). He only likes it if he is fully asleep though.
