Yoga class?

The town I live in is offering free yoga classes for Yoga Week. It is just a beginners course and I am wondering if it is ok to go ( I will be about 9 wks by then)....I talked to the instructor and at first she said no, then she asked how far along I was....she said it would be best to ask my doctor. I thought I would try here before I make the phonecall.

TIA!

Re: Yoga class?

  • I've heard that its ok as long as it isn't Bikram yoga...but I'm curious what everyone else here has heard...

You'll have to modify poses and no twists.  The doctor may be more specific on what to avoid.

  • I love yoga!

I started right before I got pregnant. I had to tell my instructor last night because she was going to do twists. They will have to tell you poses that you can or can't do. I would say you can, I just got told this morning at the doctor that it is okay. You just may want to educate yourself on the poses or movements that are not ok for pregnant ladies.

  • As long as the instructor knows and is ok with it, you should be fine!  No inversions is the biggest rule.  Anything else is ok, within moderation and as long as you are comfortable.  Just keep it gentle - twist gently, get into and out of poses gently.  You'll be great and probably feel great!
  • I should add that once you get into the second trimester you should opt for a prenatal class as your belly grows :)  It gets harder as time goes on, but for now you'll be good to go for a beginner class.

  • when it doubt, stick to a standing posture, like one of the warrior poses, or just go into child's pose or do cat/cow to ease back tension.  No hot yoga, no inversions, and be mindful with twists (I would just skip those as well and just do something else).  A great yoga teacher never minds a student respecting their limits and making their practice their own, as long as it's not distracting for the other students.  You really aren't supposed to pay attention to what anyone else is doing anyway, your practice is about you, "eyes on your own eyes" is what my instructor always said as we faced the mirror.
  • Thanks ladies! I am thinking that since I haven't really told anyone I am pregnant yet (except family) It probably isnt' a good idea if I go. I don't know how I would explain it to my friends that I am not doing all the poses....especially because I live in a town of about 1000 people...when one person finds out, the whole town will know!

I will wait for yoga until I have told my friends about the pregnancy!
