Seriously? Work parking vent!

So, I may have mentioned it before, but parking at work sucks.  We have to park prob a block and half away, in open air (no garage).  After the bed rest, I got permission from HR to park in visitor's parking (in front of bldg), which I have (happily) since.

Well, apparently, a lot of employees have been parking up there w/out permission, and this wk I've been getting calls about moving my car (not HR).  I informed them nicely I have permission, they all accepted it.

HR now came to me asking me for a doctor's note, and even better a Handicap parking pass to park up front?!  Seriously?!  I'm not an invalid, I'm pregnant, and it can be construed as high-risk.  Last yr there were 4 pg women at the same time all parking up front and no one question them... why the interrogation this year?!  I brought it up to my boss, as I thought it was unfair, and he said he?d speak to HR, and get the backstory? and poor thing even offered me his VIP parking (again, another reason why I?m going to miss him when he leaves)!

  • Ay es que people don't have anything better to do - and they love to complain about anything and everything!  Just your boss knows you are pg right?  Would your dr give you a note so they won't harass you about parking up front?

  • Slowly, I'm announcing it to everyone.  But, HR, and several upper bosses know about the pg.

I spoke to the exec asst (asst to CEO, and my friend) and asked if what is up w/ the parking issues, and she was clueless.  She mentioned that prob those asked to move outed me saying "not fair" sorta thing (like you said Doris).

I'm sure my doctor will write the note, but not sure if it will be sufficient for them.  AAHH!

  • Do we work in the same place? LOL. The same exact thing has happened here. We have to park a couple blocks away. Last year we had 6 pregnant girls at the same time, and we were all allowed to park in the front, so we didn't have to make the walk. This year, they are being super picky and even towing the people parked up front if they don't have a visitor pass.

Do they have something they can give you put up on the dash board that says you have permission to park there? What a pain! I hope they let you stay in the front, cause in a couple months, with the big belly and the heat, the walk is going to suck even more!

The parking belongs to my company, we don't share w/ anyone.  So if you park up there, you belong to the company, either visitor or employee (w/ our w/out permission).

I was even told the VP of HR was writing down license plates and comparing them w/ the employee database.  Seriously?  The VP?  No one has anything better to do?

  • I had to park a pretty good distance away from my office, I didn't really think it was big enough of a deal to complain about it though. If you're allowed to do other activity, I don't really get why you can't park in the regular parking spots? I'm not trying to be a ***, just trying to understand what the issue is! Especially now while you're not that big, leave it til when you really are uncomfortable and don;t want to walk the distance!
  • It sounds like people are abusing the visitor parking in excess; hence the need to enforce it. Also, if you haven't shared the news to everyone those enforcing it don't know and are just doing their job.

I would just get the doctor note and present it to HR that should suffice. I wouldn't stress about it, it's not worth the aggravation.

And I don't meant to be mean either, so please don't take it that way but I agree with Melanie. I never understood why being pregnant granted certain "rights" per say, as in parking.

  • Well I personally would push it and get hte note from your doctor. You have no idea how you are going to feel day to day.

Jackie, Zachary had the same due date as you (born on November 21st) and I can tell you from my experience that by 13 weeks prego I was already getting fainting spells and I almost fell on the floor and passed out while shopping in an air conditioned TJ Maxx!!!! Thankfully I held it together and found someplace to sit down before I lost conciousness but it was VERY scary.

It is already very hot outside and even as a regular person occasionally I feel a little light headed going straight from an A/C car right into the heat after a long drive.

Get your parking pass NOW or it will become even more of an annoyance later on.

That is what you call a VP trying to appear productive. Yeah, who is he kidding? lol

  • At my building, we were given the special parking treatment only for the last trimester. maybe if they are giving you a hard time, you can ask if they would at least let you park there at the end of the pregnancy? Seems fair enough especially if last year the others got to park there from the beginning.

  • I think since you've been dealing with bedrest on occasion, you should be able to park closer (especially given other pregnant women did so in the past). I hope your doctor's note will suffice and everyone gets off your back. Good luck!
  • That's annoying!  I would talk to HR, get a dr's note if necessary, and try to get the same privilege that the other pg girls got in the past.

I like being treated just like everybody else at work.  But, it's nice to have the special treatment, especially, since it's only temporary.  I have a similar issue with the distance of my office, not so much from the parking lot, but from the main office.  The main office is in the center of the main building and my office is on the third floor of the farthest building.  Only security guards have keys to the elevator b/c the principal thinks all the teachers/students should walk.  So, the elevator is only for teachers or kids who are on crutches, in a wheelchair, etc.  Although I can take the stairs, I have been asking the security guards to get the elevator for me on a daily basis now.  They're not around all the time, though, and there's no a/c in the stairwell.  Soooo.... I'm hoping that for the next school year (which will only be for August - October) that I either get my own key to the elevator or that the principal offers me some desk space in the main office.  I'd really hate to be in my third tri and taking those stairs =(

I hope you get an elevator key.  You brought back memories from high school.  I was on crutches for a broken ankle freshman year, and I got an elevator key.  My friends were always angling to "help me with my books" so that they could hitch a ride on the elevator.  I kept that key as long as I could!  Good times.

  • UPDATE - Nurse just called back to confirm what exactly I needed, and when I mentioned that my HR suggested I need a handicap permit, she was so insulted!  She said "why is being pg a handicap!"  My thoughts exactly.  LOL

I know this sounds like I'm taking things out of proportion... that I should just deal and walk. But:

    1) I feel discriminated b/c last yr they let 4 pg women park up front w/ no issues (or doctor's note - I confirmed w/ them).  Plus, I've been hemorroaging on / off during the pg, and don't want to risk adding any stress to the body.

    2) they insulted me with asking me for a handicap permit!
