I like to buy clothes on clearance for the next year and Adah has always been right on track with her size for her age, but she has recently gotten really skinny. Next summer she would be in 3t, but I wonder if I should stick to buying 2t since those are so big on her now...just wondering if anyone knows how much difference there is between the two sizes???

Re: How much difference between 2t and 3t??
In my experience I think it's always better to go bigger. That way you can throw it in the dryer and not worry if it shrinks a little.... and you can always roll sleeves, etc. Too small and nothing you can do.
While she might remain skinny, she will grow taller... so the inseam might not work as well in a 2T.

I think it depends on the brand and even the individual outfit too. I think Gymboree tends to fit a lot longer and run really long. Ellie's been in 2T from Gymboree for like a year. One pair of 18-24 overalls still even fits her. She is just finally moving into 3T tops and some bottoms, but the 3T pants are still long. Old Navy and Jumping Beans, she needs a 3T. Carter's 3Ts are still roomy on her, but she's outgrowing the 2s.
I'd probably mostly buy 3s, though. Even if they don't fit her right away, they probably will by the end of the summer, and if not, you have them for the next year. We have quite a few things I bought on clearance for this summer that won't fit this year, but will work next year.

There appears to be a very big difference between 2T and 3T, especially with bottoms. Nora is nowhere close to fitting in 3T pants even though she'll be 3 in a month. 3T shirts and dresses on the other hand fit just fine. I've found that stretchy yoga-type pants and elastic waistband shorts can always be folded over at the waistline to allow a better fit.
I have no real idea, but wanted to add this thought..
FWIW, I received some of our inherited clothes from Brandons 4 yo cousin today. One of the pairs of shorts, which is 2T, my nephew wore last week. Apparently the only problem is they're a little tight in the waist. I have no idea on the length though.
