Can you sew on tulle?

I made DD a tutu (eeek! she loves it!!! I'll PIP when it's totally done). But she wants "sparkles" on it. Without getting out the needle/thread and trying it for myself, does anyone know if there's a way to sew on tulle? I was thinking of maybe just sewing sequins on it. Would this work? Or can it not withstand the tug of the thread? I'm assuming a hot glue gun would melt it (don't have one of those, but they're cheap and I'd buy one if it worked).

Can I even tell you how happy it made me for DD to squeal with delight this morning when she came out of her room to see a 90% finished tutu in the livingroom? Other than her recent obsession with pink, she isn't into a whole lot of girly things. I love-love-love that she had on boys PJs (blue shorts, shirt with a lion driving a scooter), and yet she put on a pink tutu and played the guitar within 30 seconds of waking up. WHY wasn't I awake enough to pull out my camera?!!!

Re: Can you sew on tulle?

  • Are you talking about individual sequins all over it? If that's what you mean, I would do them by hand. They also make stretchy sequin (I think with the ribbon) that you could add around the waistband or even around the bottom.

  • btw, that's so fun! I'm glad she loves it, D loves hers too!
  • I would look for sequins that have a little hole in the middle, then hand stitch the sequins to the tulle.

I once tried to use hot glue on tulle and the glue actually melted the tulle.

  • Allens glue might work.  They make a gel that dries quickly. It would be faster than sewing them by hand.
