I didn't like the midwife...back to step 1

I went and toured the only free standing birthing center here and loved it.  That was back in February before I got pregnant.  So I called and we had our first consultation with an actual midwife...I really didn't like her and had a really negative feeling about her.  So now I'm back at square one trying to find an OB.  I had my heart set on having a midwife and going with the birthing center, I'm sort of at a loss as to how to go about trying to find an OB.  My gyno also doesn't do OB, so I really have no idea.

How did you ladies find your OB?

  • Was there only one option for a midwife?

  • There was one other midwife, but she is only part time and both midwives are at every birth.  I really didn't like her, to the point where I didn't trust her or her judgement.
  • Go here to search and just try and visit the websites.https://www.midwife.org/find.cfm

Maybe pick a few to meet? Also, just google the names, there are typically reviews out there although I would take them with a grain of salt.

Thank you, but the only midwives allowed in the hospitals here are ones connected with an OB's office and hospital, so I have to go to the OB first and if they ok it, then I can have a midwife present.  SC is a little biased against midwives, and insurance only covers a midwife if s/he is also an RN.  I have no idea how to find a new OB...

  • I asked my local bump board and then made a list of all of the recommendations from the responses.  I then went to my insurance handbook and crossed out whoever wasn't covered by my insurance.  Lastly, I went to google and kudzu.com, and cross-checked each office/doctor to see what *the internet* said (just wanted to make sure there weren't any big complaints about anyone).

    GL!

  • fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately in my area there are only three psractices allowed at my chosen hospital. One is an Ahole I know him personally LOL one has a really bad track ercord of mal practice, I was actually at jury selection on a mapractice trial where he'd horribly botched a ladie's apisiotomy ( cant spell that on a good day much les with baby brainmaking my typiing even worse!) so that left my current practice I think i won the OB lottery thoug, my OB is so wonderful.?

but th last poster had a really good idea, get recomendations (from the board and from other women you know who had a good experience) cross reference with your insurance an that'll usually thin out your choices.?

you can also still work with a midwife or doula in preperation for birth and after. that way you might feel more in control and prepared for the whole birthing thing.

  • That sucks.  Sorry. :(  Trusting your care provider is so important, especially during labour!  Not feeling comfortable with someone could totally stall your labour, and you don't want that!

If you can't find a midwife you like, hire a doula (actually, I would hire one either way.  Best decision we made for my last labour) so you can still get that one-on-one feeling.  She'll be with you through your whole labour, unlike a Dr (or even a MW in some cases).  GL!!
