Carrying too much?

I take summer classes and I usually have to carry a bag with my computer and book up from the parking lot- about a quarter mile with lots of stairs.  It doesn't usually bother me other than being a little out of breath since the BFP when I reach the top.  Today though, I get to the library and I have this strange headache the extends down the right side of my neck and a little bit of my shoulder (the side I carry my bag on).  I did carry 2 extra books today from having them at home.  Do you think its from carrying too much or I was going to have a headache anyway?  I usually don't have any problems- I just don't lift or carry anything that makes me strain since my BFP.  Its just really a funny sort of headache.

Has anyone else had anything like this after they've carried or lifted too much?

I haven't, but my philosophy is that if you're doing something that is causing you pain - don't keep doing it!

If you want to play it safe (I would), just call your doc and explain the situation.  Ask for what they recommend as a weight limit.  Weigh your bag (weigh yourself and then weigh yourself again holding the bag) and adjust as necessary.

  • Maybe you can get one of those bags with wheels?  I wouldn't carry anything that causes you pain or discomfort.
  • You probably are carrying your backpack wrong if you are getting pain on one side.  Put it on your back and you'll probably feel better.  I doubt it has to do with the pregnancy.

I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • It isn't a back pack, its a shoulder bag. But a backpack isn't a bad idea, I might have to find my old one.  It's just never caused a headache and I've definitely carried it with a lot more in it.  Everyone keeps yelling at me for carrying/lifting what they think is too much, but I've been going by the philosophy that if it doesn't make me strain I'm ok.
  • carrying anything on your back in a well strapped pack is always better than a sholder bag, preggo or not. but i would look into one of the little rolly bags for later on when you really shouldnt be carrying more than like 30 pounds and will really be huffing an dpuffing.

I think you shouldn't be do anything that gives you discomfort, first and foremost.  However, I have always given a bit of the side-eye to the black-line weight restrictions since I'm schlepping around a 30+ lb toddler, and surely that can't be prohibited (unless I was under some kind of medical restriction, etc.).
