Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Question from 3rd Tri

Hi Mommas!

Just curious about the number of night time bathroom trips post partum?

I know that my body will need to get rid of a lot of fluid, but I was wondering about how long after baby is born will the peeing every 1-2 hours stop? I just had this awful thought of having to get up to feed/change baby, then sleeping for like 30 minutes, only to get up to pee, then having to start over with the feedings all over again. I realize that I may not sleep at all the first few weeks/months, but hoping for a reprieve from the all night bathroom trips.

Thanks!

Re: Question from 3rd Tri

  • @ 2 weeks.  But, I had a LOT of edema in my legs to get rid of.

Bathroom trips have decreased significantly for me. Occasionally I will go to the bathroom during the night, but only if LO wakes me.

  • I'd only get up once at night and it's during one of LO's feedings.

  • As soon as I delivered. I went back to my normal pre-preg once a night (I'm a restless sleeper, so I always wake up at 4am on the dot).

  • I think I may go to the bathroom once during the night...and usually I go after I feed G and put her back to sleep, then go to the bathroom before bed.

    While I was pregnant-I went atleast 5 times a night...so it's much better!

  • It changed immediately with me. I was a 1-2 hour pee'er when I was in my 3rd tri, but after baby I go when he gets up to nurse, which is twice a night.

I think I lost all of my water weight from sweating.  I didn't have to get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night at all after DD was born.

As a PP said I, too had a lot of built up water weight/swelling that I needed to get rid of but it burned so bad to pee I was having a really hard time going..so I'd often saunter off to try and urinate but to no avail and my bladder was always full for the first week and a half.. Now I'm back to pre pregnancy urination (hardly ever) though I do tend to pee when DD eats at night after I've been sleeping.

    This for me too.

  • For me it stopped right after DS was born. I am good from the time we go to bed till he wakes up for his start of the day feeding of a morning.
  • i had a lot of swelling in the hospital and about a week or two after i was home so i was going to the restroom quite a bit.

  • Immediately.  I was up 7 times a night in third tri... and now I pee during the 4am feeding-just out of habit but I really don't need to.

I will say I peed for an hour and a half after I had the baby.  I was like a freaking horse... on and on and on and on... the longest pee of my life.  And maybe the first couple after that at the hospital...

  • As soon as I delivered I started only needing to pee when DS woke me up at night. I go 2-3 times but I'm awake anyway because he needs to eat.

    This.

After my c-section I had a cathetor for an extra 24hrs b/c I needed a lot of extra fluid due to a fever during labor. After it was removed and I was off the IV's things were pretty much back to normal!

  • I only get up to pee when I get up with LO.  But I will say that I'm purging my extra fluid by sweating more than I ever have in my life.  I wake up and my pjs and sheets are soaked :(

I had a ton of swelling and a c/s, with swelling after.  The night-time bathroom trips are a rare event now.  I don't remember going at all in the middle of the night in the hospital or right after I had DS.  There is certainly reprieve, don't worry!  But...you then get to attend to LO's diapers and feedings and getting them back to bed.  So, it is still disruptive to your sleep, just in a different time block! :)

The chronic peeing stopped as soon as I had him. I didn't have any issues with swelling though. I go once during the night which I did pre pregnancy plus I'm already up anyway.

  • oh it's nothing like being pregnant ... there isn't a baby pressing on your bladder anymore. in the hospital I didn't pee that frequently, even though I was drinking tons of water. I guess all that water goes into healing and milk production.

For the first couple weeks I've been sleeping in between feedings w/ out having to get up to use the restroom...don't worry.

  • I didn't make any more trips to the bathroom after baby was born than I did before I was pregnant.
