I don't have 2 under 2 yet, but I'm due in January when my son will be 16 months old. DH and I are considering using his crib on LO#2 instead of buying a 2nd crib. We're wondering if we can get away with this because the baby will probably sleep in his/her bassinet in our room until 3-4 months, like DS did. That would mean that the baby wouldn't need a crib until DS is around 19-20 months old. Do you think this is too young to move DS out of a crib and into a toddler bed? We are thinking of building him a very low bed. Basically a mattress on the floor with a frame around it, so the most he can fall is around 6-8 inches. My only concern is that he'll be able to get out of bed whenever he wants and have free range of his room, which may not be safe. Dh's aunt has bought cribs for Ds and all of his cousins, so she might offer to buy one for our next baby. I'm just wondering if we can get away with not getting another crib and if she really wants to, she can contribute in another way. What do you think? Will our DS be too little at 19-20 months old to move out of his crib?
Re: Question about cribs
personally I dont think my DS would be ready in 2 months to be in a toddler bed. we bought a new crib for DD. I also think I want him to keep things the way they are for stability too. PLus containment is my friend, I am alone with DS and will be with DD for 3 wks while DH is at work. I cant worry if DS is running around the house, or even his room. If he'll stay in it until 3 yo I would be happy !
If I were you I would wait and see, you have time and you never know what your LO will do before then.
GL and congrats!
DS will be 19 mos when Baby Girl arrives, but I am worrying about this already. I planned to get him a toddler bed/mattress and box spring on floor, but I'm starting to think a second crib might be the best solution.
Looking forward to seeing responses!
We switched DD to a toddler bed in March. She is now almost 20 months old and she's done GREAT in her toddler bed. The first couple of naps I had to put her back in her bed a couple of times, but I've never had that problem at bedtime.
When she wakes up, I'll go into her room and she asks if she can get out, she doesn't get out on her own. We decided to try it and if it didn't work, then we would buy another crib. It's not like a toddler bed would go to waste as she would've needed it at some point.
We bit the bullet and bought a second crib. DD will be 19 mos when LO#2 is born. We moved DD out of the nursery (left the crib in there for LO#2) and into her "big girl room" that has the new convertible crib and her eventual bed.
DD tosses and turns a LOT when she sleeps and is only now getting used to a pillow. She kicks off all covers. She's just not ready for a bed and with the transition of baby #2 coming, I didn't want to overdo it with her with other changes.
