DS is pretty much potty trained now except that he still wears pull ups at night. However, he refuses to poop on the potty. He asks for a pullup when he has to go no matter how much encouragment.
He was 2.5 we were promising him a trip to Chuck E. Cheese when he pooped on the potty. I was getting very discouraged as he had been peeing on the potty for several months. Then one day it clicked. he went in all by himself, pooped on the potty, then asked to go to Chuck E. Cheese.
My son is almost 4 and has been doing it for... maybe 5 mos?
It was a struggle. We resorted to bribes on the toilet. (books, candy... I know gross but he was holding it and I keep hearing that it can be really bad if they become 'holders'). I was panicked and desperate.

3yrs 2mo - he mastered peeing within a few days, but the poop in the toilet took a bit longer. I asked DS what would help make it easier to go, and he said he wanted a surprise - lol. So we went to Target and he picked out a bunch of Hot Wheels/Matchbox cars and put them in a big bowl. He was allowed to pick one car every time he pooped on the toilet (we called them "Poop Prizes")
He admired the collection for several days, refusing to go, then one day tried it, was able to pick out his "poop prize" and after a few more days of getting rewards, he had mastered the skill pretty well. After a few weeks of every-time-you-go you=get-a-car rewards, we went to Target again and picked out the "Big Poop Prize" and then prepped him for the big "finale" of getting rewards (earned the big prize, then moved on to just using high-fives and praise)
We're still struggling with some holding/constipation issues, but overall he's doing really well.
I had also asked DS what would help. He said "I think we just have to wait!". Which made me laugh b/c in a way it was true.
LOVE it It never ceases to amaze me how well children are able to articulate their needs if we're willing to ask them (and then really listen to what they say - granted not always, but often!) So cute!
I have a DD but I'll answer anyway. We just finally got her to start pooping on the potty in the past couple weeks, though she's been peeing in the potty since about 2.5. She still wears a pull up overnight and would poop first thing in the morning before getting out of bed.
The thing that worked for her was getting a fish. We made up a sticker chart with two weeks worth of spaces. She was immediately into it. If she pooped in her pull up during that two weeks, we just added a spot to the chart - I only had to add one spot though. It worked though - today we got the fish!
It was a couple months after he figured out how to go potty on it. It took awhile. I'm not sure why. We talked about it a lot, and I let him pick out a toy he would get when he went the first time. Once he started, he's had no problems (still a diaper at night though). It was a couple months before he was 3.

where I replaced the word 'monster' with 'poop'. DS can be quite fearful in general and he was just terrified of the toilet.
