In the event that breast feeding doesn't work out, I've been thinking about the legistics of how a MoMs prepares so many bottles a day.
I've read about preparing a large container of formula each day to keep in fridge and use as needed. Does this work well?
Do you use Brita Water?
How do you warm the bottles quickly? (Doesn't hot tap water in bowl take awhile?)
I know these are silly questions but I have no idea. TIA!
Re: Please share your bottle feeding routine.
I use the Dr. Brown's formula pitcher. I probably should use filtered water but as of now, I just use tap water. Hopefully that's not too bad! For warming, we use a bottle warmer (First Years BabyPro QuickServe Bottle Warmer). It only holds one bottle, so we do one at a time. But I love it.
For night feedings, we get all the bottles ready ahead of time. so all we have to do is grab the bottle, throw it in the warmer, and it's ready.
We bottle fed and at first I did not prepare a container ahead of time because we were using breastmilk and 2 different kinds of formula... 1 baby on each kind. So I would prepare 2-3 bottles ahead of time and just make more as I needed. When they were about 4 months old and on the same formula I made a pitcher at a time (in a regular tupperware pitcher).
We used distilled water the whole time they were on formula. When they were released from the NICU we were told not to boil water as it releases the copper in your water if you have older pipes which we do. Some say use tap water, but our tap water is not deemed safe, but the city (we get notices about this 3 times/year).
We put the bottles in a cup of hot water for a few minutes ... we used the Playtex drop ins and this worked fine for us. HTH.
Now I just make them as I go (because they only drink 4 bottles per day each).
Before, I would pre-measure the water in all the bottles in the morning for the erst of the day, and would just add the scoops as I went.
I never warmed their bottles (room temperature since they were newborns)....
At night I brought a formula dispenser with the pre-measured formula and the bottles with the pre-measured water.
when pumping and using breast milk i pumped and put into bottles and left out on the counter for the next feeding - bc it was only about 2 hours away and it can be out for quite some time before going bad. (kellymom.com has info on that).
when we were all formula - we make bottles one at a time - we warm the water in the microwave in a glass measuring cup - and then pour into bottles, put formula in and shake. We often use hot tap water, too. It's never been an issue.
so much easier than making a large batch and having to heat it up -- -esp when you have fussy babies who want to eat NOW.
I usually make two batches of formula per day in a large pitcher. Once mixed I make the bottles and leave them in the fridge. When they are ready to eat I take two bottles out and warm them in another pitcher of warm water. We have a reverse osmosis water system in our home and so we use that water. It's the same water we drink from and it's great. I love it. Before the babies were born my husband installed it and we were doing the alhambra water jugs but they don't have BPA free bottles and with the cost we got the osmosis system: LOVE IT!
I never wanted to use an actual bottle warmer and honestly now they don't even care and will take a bottle straight form the fridge if they are hungry, so it's great!
we use 2 dr brown's picthers per day (or so). We make the pitchers and immediately pour into bottles. Then we have a nice army of bottles sitting in the fridge. We used the munchkin bottle warmer the few times I warmed them. Honestly, our kids take bottles cold out of the fridge (strange, I know).
I use the Dr. Browns mixing pitcher and make a batch a day. They are on high cal formula so it's hard to mix and the pitcher is awesome at getting all the lumps out. There are still a lot of bubbles so I pre fill my bottles and keep them in the fridge until I'm ready to use them.
We use filterd water from my fridge o make the formula. We warm up the bottles using our Keurig coffee maker, the water is super hot and takes no time to warm the bottles.
I also bought about 24 bottles that I can just throw in the dishwasher once a day or once every other day. I hated washing bottles everyday.
We use several cheap Gerber 9oz bottles and some other bigger bottles we got at our shower and fill them with formula and put them in the fridge. We have enough for several feedings thru out the day.
We use tap water that has gone through our PUR water filter and boil it. After it cools off we pour into the above mentioned bottles. When we are ready to feed them, we take out a bottle and pour the amount they are currently drinking into 2 smaller bottles. We heat it up by microwaving a container of water and then putting the bottles in it until they are warmer.
