Pedi said today that surgery is likely necessary after 1 yr for the blocked tear ducts. I know it's common early on, but for those that dealt with it through this age -- please tell me your experience, esp. if you ended up having surgery.
we haven't had the surgery yet, but we will in the next few months. DD is 18 months. She saw a pedi opthomologist a few months ago. We were told she had a partial blockage which is why her eye is only goopy about 80% of the time and it's worse when she has a cold or is teething. We were told that it may open as she grows, but that it's not painful and it doesn't affect ger vision so we could wait to decide. After 1 it is surgery and dd will have to be sedated, but according to the eye doctor, it's quick and painless recovery. I hate the idea of having to do this to her, but at the same time, 18 months and it's still plugged. We need to fix it for her Wish I had more info for you. good luck
It was not a huge deal at all, I mean, no mother wants their child to go through surgery, but it made a WORLD of difference after words. the poor kid always had goopy eyes, and after surgery, it was completely normal.

Do the surgery and be done with it, seriously.
This. DD had it done at 13 months and I'm so glad we did it sooner than later. It was a super simple procedure and the results were instant.
My daughter had both tear ducts blocked at birth. One opened within a couple of months after massaging but the other just wouldn't. At their 9 mth appt., I told the pedi that I wanted to be referred to the eye doctor because it was starting to annoy her. We saw him, scheduled surgery for 4 weeks from then (she would've been 10 1/2 mths). I continued to massage and it opened 2 weeks later. GL.

This. Kate had it done at 14 months. We were in and out in a very short time and she came home, scarfed some ravioli, and was 100% fine.

My DD had the surgery right after she turned 1.
