Baby Names

Mason for a girl?

I'm not telling anyone our baby girls name IRL and this is driving my mom crazy.  I told her if she guesses it I will tell her so she now texts me daily with her name ideas, lol.

Her suggestion today (for a girl) was Mason.  I'm a huge fan of androgynous names (we're naming our girl Parker) but I've never heard of a Mason being a girls name.

What do you think? Boy or girl?

ETA: It's all boy in my mind.

  • My DH and I actually had this on our list for a girl, we would have spelled it Masyn.  I love it!  We also have a DD named Camrynn, I am a big fan of unisex names.

  • Dear Lord, NO. I am shocked how often I see this name posted on here for a girl.

It's a great boy name. Please keep it that way.

  • It's my son's name and I don't see anything feminine about the name at all.  Of course, I don't see anything feminine about most boy names being shoved onto girls so I'm sure there are a few parents out there trying very hard to be "youneek" who will use it on girls.

When I see it most often on a girl, it's totally butchered spellingwise, like Masyn or Macyn.  I just think that looks lower class and kind of trashy.

Sticking a "y" in Mason does not make it a unisex name.

Mason is not a unisex name. Please don't give your little girl a misspelled boy name.

If you are an adult and you misspell something as simple as a child's name, on purpose, I assume you are lower class.  I guarantee you I am not alone in thinking this.

I'm not ignorant at all, just honest and smart enough not to saddle my child with some misspelled mess of a name.

If you don't realize that people make assumptions about kids and their parents based upon names, you are clueless.

  • How is it mis-spelling...if you haven't noticed in every baby name book there are various ways to spell any name.

I am glad that you are not one of the people that "saddle" their children with a mis-spelled name, but unlike you I enjoy being different and unique.  Just because you like one thing does not mean that everyone likes it as well.

I do realize that there are people out there that make assumptions based on people names, does that make it ok though?

Totally not harping on the subject but the name is still pronounced Cameron and there isn't anything 'different' or 'unique' about that (regardless of how you spell it) I consider different and unique to apply to actual names, not just changing the spelling of them.

I agree that there is a seat for every a$$, but misspelling a boy name and giving it to a girl does not make you unique or different. It just looks dumb.

I do realize that there are people out there that make assumptions based on people names, does that make it ok though?

No, it doesn't make it ok, but if you are smart enough to realize that people do it, why impose that burden on your child?

And fwiw,I completely agree with everything BizEB has said.

There is no question that Masyn or Macyn are misspelled, regardless of what some baby book says.  Baby books have to take into account parents with bad taste.  It doesn't change the fact that the correct spelling of the name is Mason.

I don't take offense to your lame dig at the uniqueness of my kids' names.   People will correctly assume the genders of all my children and will assume that my children and his/her parents are literate and I like the names so I am happy with that.

As to your last point, I'm not one to try to "break the system" with my kids' names.  They need to go out and apply to college and get jobs and I'm not going to give them names that people will be laughing at.

  • I did not say that Camrynn was unique or different...I was simply stating that I liked unisexd names for girls.  I was saying that I thought Masyn for a girl was different and unique.

I do realize that not everyone will agree with me, but I do think that labeling a name as low class and trashy is ignorant.

So, are you saying Masyn is not a unisex name, but you still considered naming your little girl that?  With or without a "y", it's not a unisex name.  You should not name a girl Masyn.  If you like that style/sound, why not name her Macy?

  • Mason is not a unisex name, it is a boy name.  Do I like it for a girl...yes I do!   Macy is too common in my opinion.

I will tell you we have since decided not to use it, but I will not tell you what we are using, because chances are you will hate that name more.

    From Freakonomics:

"...Some of the other low-education names are obviously misspellings, whether intentional or not, of more standard names. In most cases the standard spellings of the names?Tabitha, Cheyenne, Tiffany, Brittany, and Jasmine?also signify low education. But the various spellings of even one name can reveal a strong disparity:

Ten ?Jasmines? in Ascending Order of Maternal Education

(Years of mother?s education in parentheses)

    1. Jazmine (11.94) 2. Jazmyne (12.08) 3. Jazzmin (12.14) 4. Jazzmine (12.16)

    5. Jasmyne (12.18) 6. Jasmina (12.50) 7. Jazmyn (12.77) 8. Jasmine (12.88)

    9. Jasmin (13.12) 10. Jasmyn (13.23)

Just because you find a name in a baby name book does NOT make it a name.

To your 2nd point - no, it does not make it ok, but people do it.  I do it.  I give any parent the side-eye who comes up with yooneek ways to spell a perfectly fine name.

And P.S. "Cameron" is unisex, "Camrynn" is not and yes, I would judge her name if I saw it on a resume.

  • I am glad that people will correctly assume the genders of your children, but will there be 80 billion children out there with the same name...YEP!

You are all certainly entitled to your opinion!

As much as you like to think so, giving her a "yooneek" name does not make your child a speshul snoflayke.

I don't understand why you keep making statements like this. Cameron is NOT a unique name. Just because you changed the spelling, doesn't make it unique. There will be tons of children with the same name as your child.
