RP from preemie board, If DS had hernia surgery...

Please share your experiences.  Just found out today one of my boys, the smallest one needs to have surgery. We discovered it and now have to be refered to the surgen.  I am so nervous and even more worried about my tiny, preemie baby having surgery, expecially about being put under.

How old was your ds?

How much did they weight?

How long in the hospital?

How was the recovery?

Just so worried and want to hear others experiences. TIA

Hello there!  My DDs were born at 32w3d.  My smallest DD had the surgery for a double hernia 1 month ago

How old was your ds? She was 3 months old.

How much did they weight?  She weighed 7lbs 3ozs.

How long in the hospital?  She stayed overnight because of her age/size.  I was able to spend the night in the room w/her.  I was so glad that the hospital had accomendations (reclining chair at her bedside) b/c I would have been a nervous wreck at home.  I was able to comfort her right away which may have helped me more than her ;-)  Definitely stay if you can

How was the recovery? Recovery was not too bad at all.  She was very uncomfortable the 1st night in the hospital.  She was allowed baby tylenol every 4 hours.  At one point in the middle of the night the nurse was 30 mins late w/dose.  She was very uncomfortable.  Definitely stay on top of the doses.  The doc rec. tylenol "as needed".  We continued tylenol at home for 2 days.

Good luck & hang in there!!  It will be harder on you than him.

We have gone through hernia surgery twice.

 How old was your ds? 

My oldest was 16 months old when he had it done. Kaden (one of my twins) was 6 weeks old and his was an emergency surgery.

How much did they weight?  Don't remember with Evan and Kaden was 8lbs 7oz.

How long in the hospital?  Evan's was outpatient, so as soon as he came out of anesthesia and drank something we were ok to leave.  Kaden because of his age had to stay overnight.

How was the recovery?  Both boys did great with recovery.  They were back to normal within a day or two.  We can't even see an incision scar or anything.  The worst part of everything for both boys was coming out of anesthesia.  Both were crying and it was hard to settle them down for awhile.  But some kids come out of anesthesia just fine.  

 Good luck.  I know it's difficult to have kids go through surgery.

How old was your ds?  He was born at 32w and was 3.5 weeks old when he had his surgery.

How much did they weight?  At that time he weighed 4lbs 1 oz

How long in the hospital?  He was in the NICU at that time and he was discharged 9 days later.  He would have most likely been in that long regardless.

How was the recovery?  We did great with it.  They had no complications even being a preemie!

My smaller son had hernia surgery when he was only 20 days old. He was about 5 lbs at the time. We were obviously stressed but the surgery went well. They do not use stitches they use a clear liquid bandaid that made recovery very easy for him. He also stayed overnight b/c of his age and he did have some breathing issues. He kept forgetting to breathe but it was only b/c of the anethesia. They gave him oxygen overnight and exactly 24 hours after his procedure he was breathing fine. Just as they told us he would. He will do great and I really think it will be harder on you while you are waiting for him but he will be in good hands. Please email me if you have any questions lisampowers @ gmail . com.
