MIL is telling DH to thicken the formula so DS can sleep longer and won't be hungry frequently. I don't feel safe adding extra formula and some of MIL advice invalid because she is basing this on her 6 month old granddaughter. (hello, my LO is only 1month) So I did some research and found this...has anyone used it? What do you think. I'll call the pedi later for their opinion but thought I'd as you ladies first. Thanks.
Re: adding extra formula to bottle...
Do not do this! Mix bottles as directed- otherwise you can make your LO sick.
You should never do this, regardless of age. The balance of formula to water is just right as directed. If you add extra formula, the child can get dehydrated. If you add extra water, they won't get enough nutrients.
What your MIL may be referring to is adding cereal to the bottle. I wouldn't do this either because it is not save for newborns, but at 6 months, it's ok to do - especially for babies who spit up a lot or have reflux issues.
Do not mix extra formula in the bottle.. you can get a really gassy and constipated baby. As with the formula you linked unless you buy a 3 month nipple your baby will never get it out of the regular standard newborn nipples. I tried it on my 3 month old before I bought new nipples for her and she couldn't even get it out it was so thick. I bought the 3 month nipple and it easily came out but with that I would worry she'd get too much at one time and possibly choke [DD did when she realized how fast formula came out these new nipples]
Anyways DD was so close to STTN I decided hey I'd give it a try.. it doesn't work. She still woke up at 7 am every morning for a feeding.. and she does no matter what formula I use. If you as your ped she's going to tell you your baby is too young to be STTN and he needs to be waking up for those feedings. That formula can cause him to sleep straight through the night but you have to keep in mind that bottle only has the same nutrients and what not as a regular bottle of formula.. so if he's only taking one bottle at night when he should be taking 3 or 4 he'll miss out on all those nutrients he needs which can affect his height and weight...
