Selling on Craigslist and Ebay...

Anyone done it before? Bought things solely for this purpose I mean to make money? Just wondering if you were/are successful and what tips do you have about what sells the best?

I have never bought things to purposely sell- just things I had around that I wanted to unload. I do CL mostly- as for me its just easier.

tips:

list in your origional post- CASH only- local pickup only. No exceptions. (CL)

you will get emails saying they will wire you money or send you a money order. they are all scams.

also put in your origional listing: Email with time and date to look at item. (CL)

never bought to purposely sell.  have only done craigslist--mainly to post garage sales.

kids toys--seem to sell well--think playhouse, swing set, little tikes cars, step 2 toys--things that are way pricey otherwise.

our wireless pet fence system was recently a very hot item--i had probably 7 e-mails in 4 days--we did paypal and that worked well. 

my cousin use to do a lot of e-bay selling and buying---kids clothing with tags still on sold very well for her.

I bought once to re-sell. I was buying myself maternity clothes from a CL listing and she had brand new with tag name brand maternity jeans that were too small for me and since she was only selling them for $5 each, I bought them and sold them on ebay for about $30 each.

I would do it more but I never really see anything worth doing.

I pick up items of garage sales to resale sometimes. I dont go LOOKING for it anymore, I used to in college though.

But for instance, Last week I found

Dave Ramsey set sealed for $3 and sold it on CL for $40

NWT Gap coat for 5T for $4 and sold it for $20

I just use the money to goto more garage sales, I throughly enjoy it, and it gets my shopping out for the week, I love the crisp morning air and finding name brand clothes for DD and DS for .50-$1, I dont even buy clothes for them and by looking at stores what they wear you would think I spent a fortune!

Almost all my house items came from garage sales, you would never know. 80% of their toys....and occasionally DH or I find something too

 last week I got myself a pair of coach shoes for $3...

We live in a good garage sale area with alot of shopaholics lol

For awhile I was buying maternity clothes at garage sales an reselling them on ebay.  Jeans can be really profitable.  I stopped with USPS raised their prices because shipping got to be so darn expensive.

I used to sell on ebay but ever since craigslist, I don't do it anymore. Why pay the listing fee if I don't have to?  Although w/craigslist you do tend to run into flakes. I was pretty frustrated there for a while because I had one person who was somewhat suspicious and I think she/he only wanted to scam me or get my address for who knows what reason. That's the #1 reason why I usually do not conduct transactions at home. I always meet at a public location.  I guess that would be my #1 tip.  Unless the item I'm selling is huge and unreasonable to move, I always meet at a public location. Otherwise I always have them come when my DH is home.  Even with some big and cumbersome stuff (like I'm selling my kids' Power Wheels now) I will stuff it in the car and tie it down to meet in a public place. I'd rather deal with the hassle and get the peace of mind.

I also only deal with cash.  Cash upon pick up. If I'm willing to negotiate on the price, I'll list it as obo.  If I'm listing multiple things, I give a bulk discount. For me, the discount is worth it to take care of more than one thing in one transaction.

I sell on Ebay (have a "store" and everything) & do pretty well for a little extra "fun money".  I sell mainly vintage items that I find at yardsales, consignment shops, thrift stores, etc.  For example, I bought a darling handmade vintage baby blanket that was in primo condition for $1-something and resold it on Ebay a few days later for $18.  I recently found 4 pair of  1950's woman's wrist gloves at a thrift store for $0.99/pair and resold all of them for $9/pair.  Things like that.  From time to time I get my hands on some super good new items, too.  Like brand-new Martha Stewart cookie cutters- I picked up about 60 sets of them for $2/each and resold them for $4.99.  You'd be surprised what sells and it isn't necessarily easy or fast, but in my case it's been worth it- since it's something I can do from home while my son naps and doesn't take a whole lot of effort.  Plus, my DH loves hunting thrift stores with me (for Christian books) so that makes it fun, too.
