Re: POLL: How long has DH been alone with the LO/s?

  • As pathetic as it may be, the longest has been 3 hours or something like that.  The youngest was when DD was 6 months old and only once was it during the day when DD wasn't sleeping.

  • By choice - not more than a few hours.

When we were in Arizona on his business trip I was hospitalized and there was no one else to help, he had her to himself. She was 7 months old. We were at the ER all night Friday night, then he stayed at the hospital with her all day Saturday. They went back to the hotel to sleep Sat night and she fell off the bed... and he also had MIL calling his cell phone every 2 hours to wake him up so he could check on her. He was worried he wouldn't wake up to her cries. I got out Sun afternoon JUST in time to make my flight (we were on diff flights), and she flew home with him - 2 hours to TX, then a 3 hr layover and a 1 hr from dallas to here. He practically threw her in my arms when his flight came in. lol

  • 4 or 5 days. I think it's the longest I've been alone with the LOs, too.

ETA: Oops...forgot to include age. The first time he spent several days alone with them, they were 11 months, 3, and 15. The 11-month-old was still nursing, but only a few times per day, so he used frozen breastmilk.

  • Twice he has had DS for about 6 hours. First time was when he was 2.5 months old and the second time was yesterday at almost 4 months.
  • 4-5 days! He's been with 2 out of 3 kids for 4-5 days a couple of times.

He's spent time with ALL 3 kids ALL DAY LONG about 4 times in the past couple of months.

Because I was BFing, I wasn't able to go too far in the first year of each kid's life (they wouldn't take bottles).

DH can handle it. He gets DAMN tired, but he can do it and does a good job!

He's going to watch all 3 kids in the fall for 3 days while I go to my knitting conference (he's taking off from work).....

  • Consecutively he's been alone with them for 3 days when they were 4 and 2 years old.  He even took DD to a birthday party while watching DS. I was impressed.
  • 2 days when I was in the hospital in my first trimester with my last pregnancy.  I'm confident that I could leave for a month and they'd be fine.

  • Not more than several hours...8 maybe, but not because I don't trust him or anything, just because we haven't had a situation where he needed to.

I on the other hand have had DS on my own for up to 6 months at a time (DH is military).

  • Probably about 5 or 6 hours.

A whole day and most of the next when my friends and I had a girl's day and went to concert that night.  Then we stayed over in a hotel and partied a little more:)  This was just last month so they(DS and DD#2) were/are in the prime age of loving each other one minute and hating each other the next, lol.  DH does pretty good with them though so I don't worry about it:)

  • I left her with him overnight for the first time at 10 months, but the longest he's been alone with her is 3 days (she was a little over a year old).
  • Hubby is alone with Miles all the time - he takes him while I'm at rehearsal for 3-5 hours one night a week.  Last weekend was the longest, so far, though.  He took him to Oklahoma overnight for SIL's graduation.  Probably about 24 hours?

  • When DD was 5 months old I went away for a weekend and DH had her the whole weekend to himself. When I came back he was very thankful for the things I do everyday.

  • He had her for almost an entire weekend when I went to a bachelorette party last summer.  DD was only 7 months old at the time.  I personally wasn't really ready to leave her, but I had no problem with him being the one in charge for the weekend.  He's great with her.  I just missed her a lot.  :-)

  • DH was a SAHD for 18 months, so sometimes up to 9 or 10 hours with DD alone.  She was 1 year to 2.5.
  • From about 4-6 months old, before DH relocated for work and I was still working full time, DH had G one day a week instead of sending him to daycare.  I'd leave for work at 6:30am and get home around 4.  There were several times that I came home to find them both still in PJs.  :)
  • With DS, DH had him alone for 3 days while I was at a conference, and then again for another 3 days when I was on a business trip.  (He was 10 months the first time and 18 months the second.)

DS and DD together since she was born 6 months ago?  Probably about 3-4 hours.  This is largely because DD refuses the bottle and so I must return to feed her.

  • Terribly embarassed to answer this- but the longest he has been with her is when she was about 8 months old- when I had to go into work to teach a CPA class. He was with her for 4 hours alone. and she napped part of it.

And I realize I am totally the one to blame for not letting him be alone with her more- I seriously need to work on this.

  • 8 or 9 hours.  DD is 20 months now.  The first time that happened, she was about 12 months.  Every Saturday, they are alone for 7 hours while I work.
  • DH had both of them for three days last month. They were 16 mos. and one month shy of 3. It's the first time I left them all alone overnight.
  • He had them both for a weekend while I was on a girls weekend up at the mountains (about 2 hours away).  Also during football season he had them both all day while I was at home games (I have season tix).  With tailgating and the game I was away for about 8 hours or so each time

I am still BFing but had a huuuuge stash of pumped milk.  It's gone now but she is down to 3 sessions a day so if I am gone we just give her formula

  • Recently, 4 days. DD is 8 and DS is 2 months. I went away for a girls trip. He has been home with DD plenty of times alone for girls trips or work trips. It isn't a big deal at our house because taking care of/spending time with our kids has always been 50/50. Now after being away 4 days the house/laundry was a disaster. Not so much 50/50 on that. :)
  • DH had her all by himself for about 8 hours when she was 8 weeks old (my best friend was having her first baby and I was at the hospital with her)

Then, he had her for a full day & night when she was about 18 months old and my grandfather had open heart surgery.  I was out-of-town at the hospital with my mom & Gramma all day that day.

Other than that, he's with her alone for a few hours at a time when I have doctor's appts or something and he is around.

A little less than 24 hours when DS was 18 months old.  It was the first and only time I've ever been away from DS that long.

  • most recently the longest was in March--I left Friday and came back Sunday--so he had both kids and 2 dogs Friday night until Sunday afternoon.  baby was just 2.5 months old!

he'll have them tonight for a couple hours while i go to some garage sales and out to supper with some moms from group.   about once per month he has them for a couple hours by himself

  • Starting since DS was 7 weeks old, DH watches him 2 days a week for 3-4 hour stretches while I work. DH works 1 night a week and has Thursdays off so I use him for daycare. Smile

That's the longest stretch of time DH has ever watched DS.

  • He's had a couple day when I was sick that it was just the two of them hanging out downstairs for most of the day/weekend, but I was always within earshot if he had a question or needed help badly. Totally alone, probably no more than a couple hours if DH took him out for errands. I have no doubt he could handle B for longer stretches, he's just never had to before.

  • Wow. Reality check. The longest has been 1.5 hours maybe 4-5 times since ds has been born. And usually I go ( get groceries) when ds starts his nap so there's rarely anything he has to do.

  • When DS was about 4 months DH was the stay at home parent. DH also took DS on a flight by himself (@ 11 months), but had family on the other end to help out if needed. DS is now over 3 and DH has not done more than a few hours at a time solo, due to me being around more!
  • DH is fabulous. He was alone with DD full time for 4 days when she was 5 months old. I went to Boston for my lil bro's graduation, left on a Friday morning and came back on Monday night. He was fantastic. More recently-just one day but I'm home now so it's different.

He will be flying solo again in August for a weekend when I take a girls weekend trip. :)

  • DH was alone with her for a weekend when I came out here to find housing.  She was only one, so a little easier to deal with.  But I know he could handle it again.  He's pretty used to taking over for me on a daily basis when he gets home to work.

Oops, me too.  DD is just getting into solids and still nurses every 2.5 hours or so, won't take a bottle, and so it's hard for me to leave her for any amount of time.

  • 2.5/3 days. He has done it maybe 5 times- the first when DS was 4 months old (I flew to California for my 2 BFFs baby showers). Every year I do at least 1 girl's weekend away and also participate in the 2 day Avon Breast Cancer Walk (this year I am doing 2 of them, actually) so he always watches DS for those. It was the BostonAvon Walk this past weekend and he and DS had a great time - soccer class together, DH took him on a "Duck tour" (amphibious vehicle) of Boston, out to dinner, etc. DH doesn't see DS a lot during the week, so he loves "guy weekends".

  • DD is four months now and DH has had alone time since she was 3 weeks old.  It is usually for a maximum of 4-5 hours while I work on Friday nights or Saturday mornings.  I exclusively bf, so we use expressed bottles to make it work :)  Needless to say, she isn't always happy with that.  Plus DH is not the best at getting her to go to sleep in the evening :(  So we're trying, but it is only successful about 50% of the time.

  • When DD was 6 months old I had a Doula workshop all weekend...it was from 3-10 on a Friday and 9-7 on Sat. and Sun... so I came home for bedtime and that was about all...He also has her every other Sunday for about 5-6 hours while I clean my parents house and run errands.
  • Four days.  He took time off from work and cared for Ben while Jordan and I went to Chicago (two weeks ago) to look at colleges.  He did have some help though.  His mom came for a couple of hours one morning, my sister came one day and he went to my parents one afternoon (after Ben's nap) and stayed for dinner.  Other than that, it was just the two of them and he did a good job.

On the way home from picking us up at the airport, DH said two things about being home with Ben for that time.  The first was that even though they had a few tough moments, he really enjoyed his time alone with Ben.  Also that he has a much greater appreciation for what I do all day every day.  It was nice to hear that.

I work PT-20 hours a week. Half days Mon, Tues, Thurs & 8 hours on Wed. DH stays home with DD while I'm at work (except for Tues). He loves getting to spend daddy-daughter time with her, it's so cute! And boy is she a daddy's girl!

The most DH has been alone with them is 4-5 hours while I went shopping or something on  a Saturday which doesn't happen often although I am trying to have some more ME time.

  • Not very long.  It irritates me because any time I want to do something involved that will be several hours, he calls his parents to come over.  We see them at least 3-7 times a week.  I wish DH would just take care of DS alone someday so they can have daddy/son bonding time.
