What are some good areas in Pittsburgh?

We are relocating to Pittsburgh! Any recommendations for safe areas and good school districts that are reasonable in price?!?

Re: What are some good areas in Pittsburgh?

  • I think most would agree when we think of "good areas" we think of Upper St. Clair, Fox Chapel, Pine-Richland, Franklin Regional... All of those are in different suburbs of the city.  The school district for all of City of Pittsburgh is Taylor Allderdice in Squirrel Hill and it is also a good school, although the kids are a huge mix there (graduating well over 500 kids per grade). You might want to take a look into those schools and find out which one works best for you.

Most people will also tell you those are the more expensive places to live, but I do know some families who are in the Fox Chapel school district that don't live in the really expensive neighborhoods (and are still very safe).

Good Luck, if you have any other questions, feel free to PM me.  I've grown up in Pittsburgh and have had friends at almost every school district.  If you want to know anything, just ask. :)

I agree with PP.  I grew up in the suburbs of Pgh and now live in the city.  My neighborhood was also considered "good", but again, on the expensive side.  I was in the North Allegheny school district.  Parts are more modest (where I was from) and parts are snooty.  I can help you out if you need also!

This information is incorrect.  The school district for all of the City of Pittsburgh is Pittsburgh Public Schools and they have a lot of high schools, not just Taylor Allderdice.  The school your child would go to depends on which area of the city you live in.  Pittsburgh Public also has some really nice magnet schools.  My mother has taught in the district for 15 years plus she taught there before I was born.  The quality of education is getting much better, than it has been in the past and the Pittsburgh Promise is definitely a reason to consider moving to the city.  www.pittsburghpromise.org

Also, Pittsburgh is America's most livable city this year!

I think most areas are nice, it depends on your personal preference, do you want to live right in the city? Suburbs? Or even further out?  Anyway I thought I would let you know a couple places not to move to; Penn Hills, You may want to avoid Dormont, Green Tree or Castle Shannon, they are all a part of the Keystone Oaks School District and they are currently trying to do away with their neightborhood elementary schools, combine them and turn their high school into 7-12, parents there are not happy.  And of course there are certain parts of the city that aren't so nice but they are debatable except for the really bad areas which are easily recognizable.

Good luck!  And welcome to Pittsburgh!

  • I just moved here three weeks ago and we live in squirrel hill - I have a 3 month old and am looking for Mommies to explore the city with!!
