Kaya's Mama

Any luck on the sleep issues?

Elyse has been sleeping WAY better since I've started ensuring she gets good naps during the day.  She's up at around 3am for a feeding and that's it now.

I really hope Kaya's starting to sleep better for you!  Or that you've made friends with your starbucks barista and they up you to a trenta for free Wink

Re: Kaya's Mama

  • That's awesome.  I wish she was only waking once a night!  She regressed after that one night.  It's been very erratic...waking at different times/intervals each night.  We try to make sure she gets good naps but she always wakes up after 30-45 minutes.  How long do you keep her up before she goes down for a nap?

I think I need to nurse her more often during the day so that she's not hungry at night but she wants to go 3 hours during the day, pretty much.  I don't know what else to do.

What's with the trenta?  I don't think we have them here!

  • Haha - I thought starbucks in the states was the only place that had the trenta?  Maybe I'm calling it the wrong name, I think it's a 30oz starbucks drink... sure to keep you awake for days.

Elle is normally awake about 2 hours in between naps.  I always make sure that the last 20 minutes of awake time is really calm, we sit and snuggle, or if we're in the car I turn the music down.  I find it's easier for her to transition into sleep that way.

She was only having 30-45 min naps when we were having the sleep issues too.  In the book it gives you tips on how to get them to sleep longer.  I always thought Elle was ready to get up after 30 min until I tried reswaddling her and shushing her back to sleep.  Within minutes her eyes got droopy and she fell back asleep.  Babies (and maybe adults too) have sleep cycles that last about 45 min, so it's natural for them to rouse after that length of sleep.  I try to get Elyse to sleep at least an hour and a half.

It took some "training" to help her sleep longer in the day, probably about a week of "shushing" and patting her back to sleep.  I don't really believe in CIO, the book gave lots of tips for helping them learn to sleep on their own without leaving them to cry.

I didn't follow the book completely.  I still rock her more than they recommend and she naps more in a day than they say her age should be napping.

You're not doing anything wrong!  Every baby is different!  I always feel like I'm doing something wrong when people ask me how Elyse sleeps, I almost want to lie.  But she's little (between the 10th and 25th percentile) so I'm going to feed her when she's hungry.

  • We've only gotten longer naps out of her a couple of times. Right now I'm nursing her for the third time. I'm so tired of getting up every 2-3 hours. It's so frustrating. Esp when I have to work. Ugh. I'll try to get her back to sleep when she wakes up early from her naps and see if that helps.
