4oz vs 8oz

well it looks like I'll be formula feeding due to medical issues...I'm trying to figure out how many bottles we'll need to register for.  I'd obviously like to have enough to last a whole day but I'm not sure about the 4 oz bottles... do you use them for a while?  Thanks!

Re: 4oz vs 8oz

  • I bought 20 4 oz bottles and very quickly regretted it.  They did not use them long enough to justify the cost.  I did not realize how quickly they go from 10 cc's to 5 ounces?!?!  Having said that I only had to wash them once a day and that was very helpful.  I then bought 20 8 oz bottles.

Maybe another MoM can chime in if it is ok to use 8 oz bottles early on.  If yes, then I would stock up on them instead.

....when did your LO's start drinking more than 4 oz at a time?

  • I used 4 oz until about 6 or 8 weeks, I think?  Then they started taking 5 oz and I moved to the 8 oz bottles.  I don't regret having the 4 oz bottles.  The 8 oz looked huge against the tiny babies and 1 oz in an 8 oz bottle is kinda crazy.  But then again, my bottles all came off my registry, so I didn't pay for any of them.  :)

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

I would have to check my old log book (which is at home) but I would guess around 2 months?

  • I would get a good amount of both.  Or maybe 6 oz bottles like Ventaire.  DS1 has been on 5 ounces since 5 weeks and DS2 is still on 4 oz, but I'm thinking we may move him up this week to 4.5 ounces and hopefully by 3 months have him on 5 ounces.  DS2 has reflux, so we try to be careful about giving him too much.

This exactly - I don't regret having 4 oz bottles at all (although they all came off my registry!)  I'm still using them now.

  • Mine drank 4 oz for a long time.  They are only drinking 5-6 oz now at a bottle feeding.  But I know I am in the minority.  I wouldn't register for many.

  • I wouldn't register for the 4oz ones at all!  As pp's have said the babies move onto bigger bottles so soon that it's a waste of money...even if it's not your money.  Have people buy stuff for you that you'll use longer.  I used the disposables from the NICU (2oz) and then went straight to the 8 oz ones and I only have 6 bottles and it works out just fine.
