reflux

Anyone's LO have reflux issues? I'm starting to suspect that Will might have a problem in that area. We're careful to burp him a lot, feed him in a more upright posture, etc., but the poor little tyke still spits up a lot and also howls from frequent gas pain. Does gripe water help at all (Lori, I think you've used it with Libby)?

Re: reflux

  • Elyse had reflux early on, she would scream after she ate when she was spitting up.  The doctor prescriped some form of baby zantac.

I also put a pillow under her mattress in the crib and the incline helped at night time.  I did have a hard time keeping her from slumping over so I bought those air flow snugglers to keep her from sliding over.

  • Oh and for gas pains, I don't find gripe water helps Elyse as much as a product called Oval does.
  • Libby was never officially diagnosed with reflux, but she did spit up something awful from about 3-8 weeks.  Now, it's MUCH less.  I suspect that my oversupply issues may have exacerbated it all.  I found that burping her gently helped (just basically sitting her up and lightly rubbing her back in circles vs. putting her up on our shoulders and patting, etc.) and letting her sit upright for 15-20 minutes after a feed.

She does get horrible gas bubbles and screams...so we give her Colic Calm: www.coliccalm.com

It works wonderfully and is all-natural (no artificial colors, sweetners, etc.)...it can be messy though since it has vegetable charcoal in it.

  • My LO has reflux.  He's on prevacid (after the zantac didn't do anything).

Try to keep him upright for 15-30 minutes after he's eaten.  Like pp said, also try to have his head elevated when sleeping.  Frequent burping helps, as does smaller meals (although not sure how you control that with BFing). They also had us thickening feeds with rice cereal in the bottles, but again, not sure how you do this with BFng. We've also used a natural Gripe Water called Baby's Bliss, which helped him a lot.

To this day, we still can't feed him more than 4oz of formula at a time.  We just have to feed him more frequently.
