S/O of post below...Cameron

In parenthases next to Cameron was (boy)

Brought up something up that I've been wondering for a while now. Has this name successfully crossed the gender line? I've always thought of it as a boy name and had never heard of it as a girl name until about 10 years ago as I was graduating high school. Just wondering your thoughts. So....a poll

Re: S/O of post below...Cameron

  • I voted "either". I've known both males and females of all ages with this name. I think it works fine for either sex, but I prefer that regardless, the original spelling is used.

  • I hate the name Cameron for a girl. What's next- naming DD Adam or Jacob or Matthew?

  • It is a boy name. When I see Cameron (or any other boy name) on a girl, it just makes me think the parents wanted to give their daughter a boy name, not that the name itself is unisex or a girl name all of a sudden.

I've known three female Cameron's, but no no males with that name. I chose either though. It's one of those names that's really a last name, so to me, it can go either way.

  • It is a boy name to me.

However, my parents' Shih Tzu (that we've had since I was 12) is named Cameron, and she is female. My step-dad named her after Cameron Indoor Stadium, where Duke plays. So I always think girl dog and boy human :)

  • i think of Cameron Diez when i think of that name
  • I put either because it is unisex imo.My older brother's mn is Cameron but I grew up with two girls named Cameron and this was back in the 90's so it has been uni for a while in my area. The new spelling for a girl is Cameryn/Camryn though and i am not a fan of that. Looks like someone was typing too fast and misspelled Camry as in Toyota Camry.
  • I think it crossed into female popularity because of Cameron Diaz.

  • Before we knew this LO was a girl, Cameron was on our list for a boy.  When we found out we were expecting a girl, DH suggested we still consider it for a girl.  We are.  I think Cameron Diaz and Camryn Manheim have made it gender neutral.

  • The only girl I know of with this name is Cameron Diaz.  I don't like it for a girl at all, I think it is very much a boy's name.

  • Cameron is one of our top names for our GIRL. We're thinking of Cameron Elizabeth, but I'm worried about the nickname of Cami which I really don't like.
  • I think its great for either a boy or girls name.  When we were choosing names before we knew we were having a little girl, we were going to name the baby Cameron either way, but my boyfriend liked it better for a girl. We are expecting a baby girl, and I love the name for her. Names evolve all the time, and its kind of narrow minded to think of it as just a boy's name, its a beautiful name for either.  Big Smile

Is it narrow-minded to think of Isabella as just a girl's name? Would you consider Peter for a little girl? Or Bruce? What about Madeleine or Brittany for a sweet little boy?

Opinions are not narrow-minded, they are opinions. MY opinion is that it's better to choose a name that matches the gender of the child. Ever heard of "A Boy Named Sue"? Name your child Wilburforce if it makes you happy, but MY opinion of Cameron is that it is and always should be a BOY's name.
