Babies: 0 - 3 Months

how many pacifiers needed? sizes?

I was wondering how many pacifier a baby needs?  Also, should I invest in pacifiers for ages 6 - 18 mos or should baby have been weaned off of them by this time? TIA

  • You will need one or two soothies....for right away.  I personally like the Wubba Nub Soothie animals because it helps the little ones keep them in better.

As far as regular paci's, we have six, but we also have paci strings, so we really only use one of them.  We haven't yet invested past 0-3 because we don't know yet if Asher loves this brand...not worth the money.  I have no plans for buying 6-8 months paci's....but that could change.

  • We have one - the one that the hospital gave us. But honestly, I think it depends on your LO, because mine almost never uses it. I think since she came home we've used it twice - and she spit it out after about two minutes.

I have no intentions of getting any more as long as she stays like this.

  • Keep in mind before you go stock up on pacifiers that not all babies will take a certain kind and some won't take them at all. I made the mistake of buying, boiling, and having my DD not like any of the pacifiers I'd bought. It took trial and error of buying several different kinds before we found the one that worked for us! Once you find one that works it's nice to have 5 or 6 because I'm constantly misplacing ours. :)

  • We have 4, all nuks. LO likes the first one we had, so we didn't try any other brands. I'd definitely recommend having at least 4. They get nasty fast, and DS has a tendency to spit them out on the floor, etc so it is very handy to have a stockpile. Plus, they are cheap. A 2 pack of nuks is a little less than $3 at Target.

  • DH and I decided that we weren't going to use a pacifier unless DD needed one.  She is just over a month now and haven't needed one to soothe her yet.  We also made the mistake of buying/ registering for pacifiers before she was born and then washing them.  We have about 12 pacifiers now in all different sizes that I don't think we'll ever use...

  • We have about 10 pacis (0-6 months) and 2 pacis (6-12 months).

We took away the paci at bedtime/naptime at 5.5 months, so she only gets a paci sometimes in the day, and usually she just plays with it instead of actually sucking on it.

Personally, with the next kid, I'm not going to buy any 6-12 month ones, but a few 0-6 month ones. They were our life saver from 0-4 months, so I'll definitely use them again, but take it away at bed/nap time at 5/6 months.

ETA: You really only need 1 or 2, but we have 10 because we keep 2 in the diaper bag, one in the living room, one in the nursery, one in our bedroom, etc. This way there's always a paci around, and we don't have to go searching.

This! We needed to try a few kinds before DS would take any.  I would suggest having one or two of a few different kinds (I recommend the NUK brand) and then buying more once you know what kind LO likes.

  • We need approximately 12 million - give or take a few....

My DD takes all brands (but I do think the NUK ones stay in better!).  So we have a couple of each brand.  Then factor in my two dogs stealing the pacifiers every chance they have....and that bring my total to 12 million. I buy a 2 pack of MAM or NUK almost every time I am shopping bc thats how many my dogs chew up.  They are so sweet and gentle to her, lay by her bassinet, sit with us on the couch....but something about those pacifiers gets them going!!!
