I'm deciding between 2 diaper bags--one is a lot wider than the other so I don't know which to go with. What exactly goes into a diaper bag besides diapers, wipes, and an outfit?
It really depends on the child. DS was a reflux baby so if I was going out of the house I needed to carry at LEAST 3 bibs and 3 changes of clothes, plenty of diapers, wipes, meds, diaper cream, I don't carry a purse, so my wallet, cell phone, checkbook, keys, chapstick. I would also carry an extra blanket in case the one I had in his seat with him got messed up. (If you're going more than a few quick errands you probably want more than 1 change of clothes in case of a poopy blow out!)
Now that he's older, for a while I was able to carry my messenger diaper bag, 1 change of clothes, toys, snacks, sippy, my things, diapers, wipes, meds, diaper cream... of course now we're dealing with car sickness so I'm about to go back to the bigger bag for any trips where we'll be in the car for more than 45 minutes since that seems to be the magic # where sometimes he gets sick.
Depending on where you live, two blankets might be needed. It was around 65 earlier today, and a light blanket on top of his clothes would have probably been fine, but it's 40 degrees out now, and he'd definitely need something heavier. And I'm messy, so I'd need at least one new shirt, and if you're bottle feeding, you'll probably have one of those formula containers and two or three bottles (that's what we did for my adopted sister). And if your baby is anything like my sister, you'll probably need a few extra socks, she took hers of everywhere, and we could hardly ever keep anything on her feet.

For an infant, here's what I typically carried:
- burp cloth or two
- spare outfit
- bib or two
- bottle (maybe, I breastfed, but there is a good chance you will have one with you)
- pacifiers
- small blanket
- small toys or lovey or something
- diapers, wipes, diaper cream, changing pad
- spare shirt for you
- anti-bac wipes
- socks/hat/jacket
- As they get older: spoons/forks, snacks, place mat, toys and/or books, sippy cup
this plus some snacks for you
