3rd Trimester

anyone not able to take the 3 hour glucose test?

I've tried twice now. The first time he told me to drink it within 5 minutes and I threw it up. I just tried again this morning and he didn't even enforce a time limit on finishing the beverage so I took my time, and I didn't even finish, and I still threw up.

I took it first thing in the morning so all of my fasting was done while asleep. I almost threw up on the 1 hour and felt really crappy so I'm not really surprised this has happened. I only failed the test by a few points and according to one website at least my score is passing so I feel like my doctors threshold is strict. I didn't fast at all for the 1 hour.

So, just curious if anyone else was unable to complete it and how their doctors proceeded.

Re: anyone not able to take the 3 hour glucose test?

  • I threw up but my OB had me continue the 3-hour test anyways. I ended up passing the 3-hour with flying colors, but if it had been a close call, they would have had me re-take the test.

Oh you mean they kept taking your blood even though you threw it up? Like the same day? I wasn't given that option :/

The lab that does it is different than my doctor's office and he basically told me not to come back...LOL I think he is sick of cleaning up my puke.

  • I almost puked also - I did my best to keep it down and forced myself - it was incredibly unpleasant.
  • I threw mine up too but it was b/c I was on terb & had just been released from the hospital 2 days prior. I was a wreck. He still took a blood sample and had it sent off. I wasn't at a high risk anyways he wasn't too concerned.
  • My friend couldn't keep hers down and her midwife made her do and pb & j sandwich and some sugary juice.  Maybe research that theory or see if that's an alternative with your dr.
TTC since 05 :( Dh diagnosed with azoospermia. Unsuccessful reconstructive surgery in 07-08. IVF w/ ICSI #1: BFP! 1 strong heartbeat and 1 lost twin @ 2nd U/S...bittersweet Lilypie Second Birthday tickers
  • My midwife said that if I didn't pass the 1hr that she would just give me a monitor to check my levels after eatting, I would just ask if you could have a monitor to check for one week to see how you are doing, it's more accurate anyways!

I had to go to the lab at the hospital since my OB doesn't have it's own lab. The lab tech called the office and told them I had thrown up and what they wanted to do. My OB made the call to still have me continue doing the 3-hour test.

  • I couldn't hold down the orange drink for the one hour - I only drank a third of it and it all came back up.  My OB did an alternate test - the 28 jelly bean test!  You could inquire if there is an alternate for the 3 hour test....
  • I threw up about 25 minutes into my first attempt at the 3 hour test.  The drink itself didn't bother me, but it made me very ill.  They had me take a dose of Zofran before taking it again the next week.  It definetely helped me not to feel so dizzy and ill.  I ended up failing, which I suspected would happen after how bad the drink made me feel.  I only failed the 1 hour test by 1 point, but ended up having GD!  I was told if I couldn't keep it down the second time, that they would just treat me as if I had GD.

I had a 141 on the one hour test and my OB uses 140 as the cutoff.  My GD is really borderline and I can easily control it with diet.  I've only had to cut out a few certain foods and just watch my portions.

I am so wishing my OB went by 140. Yea `141 is low. Can't believe you failed the 3 hour. Glad its easy to control though.
