MH wnats to take the girls to our neighborhood pool today!  Are they too young?  I would also have to put sunscreen on them...I've never really heard the "do's and don't's" about this!  thanks

Re: Too young for swimming?

  • at just 2 mo i probably wouldn't put them in the pool - and would not put sunscreen on them unless there is no way to keep them out of the sun (which i suppose shouldn't be an issue - put in stroller or car seats with sun shades.)

my pedi said wait until 6mo for sunscreen unless absolutly necessary- and then use paba free sunscreen - and only a small amount.

but you can certainly take them to a party!

  • I agree with Goldie.  From everything I've read - no sunscreen until 6 mos.  As for swimming I would err on the side of caution and wait.

  • We were told no public pools for the first 6 months (too many germs/bacteria), but our boys were 10 weeks premature too.  They said we could put them in our backyard pool when they were about 3 months old.  You can actually use sunblock on babies, but most doctors don't recommend it until 6 months (because of all the sunscreens out there).  They are 2 totally different products.  Also shade is really important and you don't want them to over heat.  So I agree with Gail.. just waited to tell you our doctor's opinions on pools too.

  • Last summer our pedi said to keep DD out of the sun until she was 6 months old because she said no sunscreen until 6 months.  We didn't bring DD into a pool until she was 7 months old.

    What's the difference?

  • I think sunblock (as opposed to sunscreen) is the stuff with zinc oxide in it, and it's better for your skin.

I agree w/the others that I wouldn't take them to the public pool, or out in the sun for that long, at this age. I guess we were lucky in a way that our boys were winter babies b/c they were 7m by the time we took them to the pool and beach for the first time.

  • My Pedi says sunscreen is recommended if you will be in the sun.  Better than a sunburn.

But I probably wouldn't do the pool until at least 6 months.

    Have fun!

  • there is a pedi. dermatoligist on 6-12 and she said the sunBLOCK is safe, sunscreen is 6months+. The names are used interchangably, so you have to look at the ingrediants, but she did say, Neutrogena Baby Pure and Free is what she used on her DD, there were some other brands she recommeneded as well, but I bought the Pure and free for the kids. I do agree with the PP's I think too young for the pool, but certainly go and hangout in the shade.
