formula - ready made vs powder

Has anyone found that their child's reflux and/or gas is better when using ready made formula?  My Mom had my son for the day and had a much easier time with him than I have in the past month or so.  I never noticed a difference with my daughter, but am wondering if this could be the ticket to a bit less fussiness, which there seems to be a great abundance of these days.

Re: formula - ready made vs powder

  • It is thought that there is less gas with pre-made due to less air bubbles when mixed. Other then that the pre-made and powder are the same.

Do you pre-make the formula for the day to let the air bubles settle before giving it to the LO? I try to make the bottle and let it sit in the fridge ahead of time. I have also found that Gerber Good Start has less bubbles. Of course, I am only suplimenting at this point (2 out of 7 bottles a day formula, the rest is pumped BM).

  • I did like the premade formula because it was easier on me (preparation) but its so much more expensive and I didnt notice a BIG enough difference gas wise to justify splurging on it. But I have to rave about the Dr Browns mixing pitcher.  Its designed to mix the powder without any bubbles (so way less gas) and it makes my life easier b/c I can mix up a big batch for the whole day.  Best $16ish I've spent recently!

  • I am making the formula in advance, and there are absolutely no visible bubbles when I feed him.  That is a great tip, though, for anyone else out there dealing with the issues.  I am also glad to hear the review of the Dr. Brown's pitcher.  I have considered getting it, but wasn't sure if it was worth getting a new one when there is nothing wrong with the one I currently use.

I always thought the ready made was so much more expensive.  However, I spent last night researching costs and it looks like it will be fairly equivalent.  I go through about a can and a half of powdered a week right now, an would go through about a bottle a day with the ready made.  With a $5 coupon (which I won't always have), I can get a can of the powder at Sam's for $23.98 plus tax.  I found a case (6 bottles) of the ready made formula on Amazon for $30.55.  I wanted to share this in case anyone was interested.

After having much easier feeds last night and this morning, I am planning to switch for the time being.  Thanks ladies.

  • For a time my son was on Alimentum and we found the ready to feed worked much better for him. I know the Alimentum ready to feed was also thicker than the Alimentum powder and that helped. He ended up on EleCare which only came in a powder. We used "Thick-It" and with the EleCare and it worked great.

Anyway, never hurts to try the Ready To Feed.

  • RTF formula frequently has far less corn in it than powdered formula. We had the same problem, though we also still had trouble with RTF. We tried umpteen hypoallergenic formula with no success at all (Actually, Elecare which is supposed to be "the best" landed him in the hospital with dehydration because he puked it so badly)

We finally found Good Start which is NOT made with corn syrup solids and it was SO much better.
