Prefold prep!

I am going to start out by apologizing for asking this question for what I bet is the 150th time today. All this Pampers talk around the bump today has made me realize that I need to get my prefolds prepped. I have green mountain unbleached organics and the instructions say to wash them 3-5 times in hot water. But I've also heard I can boil them instead. Can you EFF ladies fill me in on the boiling? How many times would I boil them? For how long? Is is even recommended to boil them instead of washing? It just seems like such a waste of water to run the machine so many times!!! TIA for your help.
