1st Trimester

Weight Issue

I am, and have been, kinda sorta overweight for about a year now.  I am 5'1 and weigh 147-150 (depending on how good of a morning I'm having).  I remember the good old days when I could fit into a size 2 and play soccer and dance around without getting worn out.  I don't know whether or not to start my weight loss program knowing that I will gain weight anyway, or just wait until after the baby comes and then try to lose everything all at once.

Re: Weight Issue

  • I think you should consult with your OB prior to starting a weight loss program while pregnant.

I am also overweight. I'm 5-6 and 210 lbs. I am waiting to talk to my obgyn at my first appt when I'm about 10 weeks to ask her about exercise. I'd like to use the elliptical but everything I've read says not to start a new routine in early pregnancy.

  • I feel your pain. I'm about the same height and weight!  I was working on weight loss before my bfp, but now, I'm just trying to eat healthy.  You should try to lose weight while pregnant.  Just try not to gain too much, so it'll be easier to take off afterwards.  In Dr Oz's You: having a baby, he has a good chart based on BMI of how much overall weight to gain during pregnancy.  I don't have the book with me at work, though, so I can't say exactly what it is...

  • I would focus on doing what is best for you & your baby while pregnant.  The pregnancy books & websites that I have read say not to try & lose weight while pregnant.
I'm with you - I am a bit over weight pre-pregnancy but will focus on losing the weight once I give birth.

  • I can't remember where I read it, but I read somewhere that trying to get to a heathier weight in the first trimester was ok.  Hmmmm....Yeah, i'm gonna write an email to my dr.

  • I've always been overweight and was terrified I would get chubbier during pregnancy.  I joined babyfit.com - it helps you track your weight and calories during pregnancy, so I don't feel as guilty "watching my weight" while I'm pregnant.  Good luck!  We're all feeling your pain  :(
  • Yep!  There is no "sorta" about my being overweight now when years ago I could fit in a size 4.  You will hear the typical - Make healthy choices, get a little exercise (walking has been helping me), etc. which are all true.  I will tell you that my best friend, who was significantly overweight when she was pregnant with her first child, gained 10 pounds during the 9 months and lost 65 after he was born.  Your Dr. can give you the safest advice for YOU because everyone is different.

Yeah, just email your Dr. because he/ she will give you what seems to be the best advice for YOU. Everything I have read (online, in books, etc) says not to try to lose weight when pregnant, but when I asked my Dr. about weight gain at my 1st visit she told me that it would be perfectly healthy for both the baby & myself if I didn't gain any weight, and even if I lost some it wouldn't hurt. I was pretty much your exact height & weight range pre-pregnancy (I have already gained a few pounds... ooops), but who knows what your Dr. will say.

talk to your doctor, but most will say its not good to TRY to lose weight during a pregnancy. Six months before my BFP, I was in a size 4. In the 2 months leading up to my BFP, I was in a size 8. So I def gained some PRE-pregnancy weight so I started this pregnancy about 25lbs heavier than my norm. I have lost about 7lbs so far in the pregnancy, but mostly because I have trouble keeping things down and I have a lot of food aversions. I'm not purposely trying to lose the weight.

Just listen to your body. Eat whatever you can keep down. Light exercise is always good, but don't over-do it and don't count calories.

People expect you to gain weight during pregnancy, theres plenty of time to lose it afterwards.

  • You defintely don't want to start any weight loss program while pregnant. Most likely, you can keep your overall weight gain down (and take good care of your LO at the same time) by eating healthy food and exercising. You can't really start a brand new fitness routine, but take walks daily. It will help your energy level and help keep your weight gain under control.

In general, it is not advised to lose weight during pregnancy at all.  I would focus on eating healthy and you can probably start doing light exercise, like walking, although I would check with your OB first.

Funny you should ask today, because a new study just came out about this and a colleague emailed it to me today.  From the study, they were recommending women to gain at least 15 pounds or so.  They found adverse effects when women had minimal weight gain or lost weight during pregnancy.  I have to go back and read it, but I believe it may have been linked to small for gestational age babies.
