Preemies

We are home and grunting!

After 67 days in the NICU we were finally discharged yesterday!  Sydney is doing great so far and we are soooo happy to have her home.  While she was in the hospital she would grunt a lot but I guess because I was coming and going all the time I didn't realize HOW much she did it!  Does anyone know why these little ones grunt so much??  The nurses never had an explaination for me nor did they tell me when it would stop!  I'm guessing it's like everything else preemie and she will grow out of it but it makes for some sleepless nights!!

Re: We are home and grunting!

  • Congrats on being home!!  The grunting is normal, DS did it for a long time.

  • Oh the grunting. We didn't sleep at all the first night. I sleep through it now. I think it has lessened. I just can't wait until LO starts to actually make baby sounds and not just grunt.

Congratulations, enjoy your baby being home!

I remember posting here about the grunting.  I think it stopped after they were 3 months old, maybe 4 months old.  It was really bad for my son, I had trouble always sleeping with the grunting in the monitor!  I have no advice to just let you know it's normal and I have no idea why.

side note, I did notice it decrease A LOT when my son was put on reflux meds.

  • congrats on being home!  my little ones grunted also, ALOT!  I didn't really notice it that much when they were in the NICU because of all the noise.  When they came home, it was hard to get any sleep at all because they made the grunting noises constantly.  I think it stopped around the time they were approaching 2.5-3months old.

  • Oh yes the grunting.  Many sleepless nights because of it.  We are starting to get used to is now. She is grunting away on her play mat right now.

  • Thanks everyone!  I also didn't notice the grunting as much when she was in the NICU but it cracks me up how much she does it-especially when she does the machine gun grunt!  haha  I'm sure that she isn't going to last very long in our room...we haven't gotten much sleep!
  • Congratulations!!! We moved DD out of our room pretty early, too. I wanted to keep her in for ~6 months, but she kept waking me up, then I'd go over to check on her and wake her up. Bad all around!

Yay for being home...as far as the grunting, boy do I remember when we first brought DD home...the grunting was out of control and I didn't really hear her do it too much in the hospital so I was so worried that first night until my dr told me it was completely normal. She grew out of it after about 2 months!
