Upstate NY Babies

I had my 20 week appt today.

I can't believe I'm halfway through! Anyway, everything looked good. He's still a boy, and he's big still. We met with the first dr I've seen so far, who said everything looked great, but to plan on once a month growth ultrasounds, and if I don't go into labor by 39 weeks, I'll be induced b/c of my hypertension...

Has anyone had this told to them before? What was your experience? How does an induction work? Will I get to pick the day?

Thanks ladies!

  • I was induced at 39 weeks too.. not because of hypertension though.. just because of the medication I was on.. and it was easier to plan an induction than gamble with when I might go into labor.. I did not really get to pick the day.. The hospital won't let them do elective inductions before 39 weeks.. so I was induced the day I turned 39 weeks..

It seems every dr does it differently..I always hear of people going in the night before to do the cervix softening and then starting pitocin in the AM, but we just went in the AM.. and around 8am, my dr broke my water and they started me on pitocin.. Basically just normal labor from there on out..got an epi around 11am..  I started pushing around 4:30pm and Eve was born at 5:51pm..so it was about 10 hours..

this is what my doc did... but I was induced because I was a week (and a day) overdue, and my fluid was borderline low.

  • I had growth ultrasounds from 37 wks on and NSTs at 39, 40 & 41wks. Even though they were "concerned" with his size it played no part in my induction.

I was scheduled to be induced at 42 weeks. At 41 1/2 weeks my water broke at noon. Around 5pm I was given cervadil to ripen the cervix, it looks like a teabag that's inserted into your hoo-hah. My contractions slowed down so the next morning at 8am I started pitocin and an IV. They gradually turn up the pitocin every hour. By 4:00 I was at 10cm/ready to push and had him around 7:15.

  • Oh and no, I couldn't pick the day. My OB does inductions on certain days of the week so I was just scheduled. I go to a group practice and 1 Dr. said at 39 weeks we would start talking about induction, then my 40wk was with the ultra-crunchy-midwife who refused to even schedule any inductions until 41 weeks. I wanted to punch her.

I was scheduled for an induction due to high blood pressure on my due date...I was threatened with an earlier induction but my bp regulated to an "acceptable" high level toward the end of my pregnancy.  My induction was scheduled for when my doctor would be at the hospital and I didn't get a choice of dates. However,  It wasn't meant to be as my water broke the day before and DD was delivered, via c-section, on her actual due date.

  • Time is flying!

I was induced at 37 weeks exactly due to gestational hypertension, which was really high.  I will fill you in on it next time we get together.

  • I don't think you get to pick the induction date.  Crouse has a new policy for inductions, so they (usually) do a cervical ripener in the evening and begin pitocin in the am.  If you haven't delivered by a certain time in the evening after starting the pit, they will shut it off, let you rest and start again the next morning.  They also up the pitocin every 30 min now instead of every 15, so hopefully the contractions don't get too unbearable.

Which doctor did you meet today?
