We have no central air or heater (or insulation) in the house that we're renting (there is a feeble floor heater in the living room, but it doesn't heat much.) Anyone else in this situation?
We live in the San Gabriel Valley, so it gets very warm in the summer and cold in the winter. I have no idea how to have an infant in this situation. A space heater/window air conditioner in the nursery.
Any thoughts appreciated!
Re: Older homes without central a/c and heat
I'm in the same boat. I'm due in July. We're in Long Beach but not close enough to the beach for a nice breeze. I'm most worried about those really hot summer days. We are going to put up a ceiling fan which I know won't do much but is supposed to help prevent SIDS since it will keep the air circulating. I have no idea if it's good to have a window unit in with an infant.
My fireman friend told me there is a safe space heater that we can use in the winter. I have to get the details from him and I'll let you know. I really wish we could afford to put in central air/heat. Sucks.
I would love to get info about the safe heater! That might be a workable winter solution (I'm due in January).
I have no idea what to do about summer time - there have been days when our house gets to be 98 degrees inside.
I am really concerned about summertime too. We have the same problem you do. I'm going to get some blackout shades for the windows in the baby's room. Not sure how much that will help but it can't hurt, right?
We have an older home, No central. We are in Pasadena.
We have a window unit in the living room, and ceiling fans in each bedroom. They really do make a difference. We also put film on each of our west facing windows (bedrooms). In DS room we use a portable a/c unit, it has a programmable thermostat. We are thinking of getting one of those small window units instead this summer since we will have LO, but maybe not as LO will be sharing our room for a while.
Maybe awnings over the windows, we are considering doing that this summer. We also have trees/bushes near the windows to provide shade.
In the winter we have a programmable space heater that we really like in DS room, I will check what brand it is.
DH is a firefighter so we have safety 1st at all times.
Good Luck.
