if you use/used a white noise machine with LO

my DS sleeps with a white noise machine every night - all night and we even have to use it in the car...  he HATES the car.

i don't want my little guy to be dependent on it - and i worry that we might be using it too much

what has been your experience with white noise - have you been able to wean your LO off of the white noise machine?

  • We just went cold turkey. Had no choice, we left it at the ILS on Sunday.

Sunday night they each woke once but they wanted bottles so I'm not sure there is a correlation. Last night they STTN so I don't think they missed it at all.

  • DD loves her noise machine, and she is dependent on it.  I know many adults dependent on white noise to fall asleep, so I don't really think it's a big deal.  Cold turkey is probably the best way to go if you want to do away with it.

  • We use a white noise machine.  As far as I'm concerned, he can use it as long as he needs it.  Because of the baby monitor, I now find that I need it to sleep too!
  • We use it all day every day at home, but never in the car or at my mother's or my ILs house.  She seems to do fine either way (but obviously better with it on).
  • I gradually lowered the volume.

  • We use it every night, but we were on vacation this weekend and we didn't travel with it, he got up a couple times a night, but he does that at home too. I don't mind if he uses it until he's in high school if that's what helps him. I would think cold turkey would be the easiest.

  • I see no issue with the white noise machine.  DH and I sleep with a fan on for the noise.  It helps drown out every little neighborhood noise and helps us sleep better.  If you're that concerned, I'd just lower the noise every night until it's gone or take it away cold turkey.  I plan on letting DS have his until he no longer wants it.

DD uses one every night and for nap.  The noise actually helps me sleep as well.  I've been told that continuous use can cause problems in hearing development but I haven't had a chance to talk to the pedi about it.  I'll ask at our next appointment.

  • No advice here. My daughter is 4 1/2 and still needs the fan to sleep at night. My son sleeps to white noise. My husband and I need a fan. We are all white noise addicts.
