Thinking about VBAC

Hi everyone... Just wanted to hear from those women who gave birth via c-section for baby #1.  Are you planning another c-section or trying for VBAC?  Before I got pg, I was for SURE doing another c-section for baby #2 (mostly because I could plan it out and have care arranged for DC #1, etc).  However, the more I have thought about it, the more I am considering VBAC.  I feel like I want to try again and have that experience.  Your thoughts for yourself?  Just curious what everyone is thinking and why or why they might not want to try VBAC. TIA!

Re: Thinking about VBAC

  • Why not! It's better to try. You heal faster and your not cut open~ I have a article about C's if you are interested..

  • I'm having a repeat c/s.  For me a VBAC isn't even a consideration...
  • i'm thinking about it.  I want to be able to bounce back quickly after giving birth.  I'll have to talk to my OB because DS was almost 10 pounds and was definitely not able to fit through.  Hopefully this LO will cooperate a little better
  • I am planning a VBAC in September. DS was born via c/s because he turned breech 5 days before my edd. For me personally, it's important for me to try a VBAC. I never labored at all with DS and hope to experience that. I also would prefer not to be recovering from major surgery while taking care of a newborn and a very active toddler. I encourage you to do research on the risks of both VBAC and repeat c/s. Also talk to your doctor about their views on VBAC. It's important to have a doc who is truly supportive of VBAC. Also, there is a google group for bumpies with an interest in VBAC. It's a great support group. Page Iris on 12-24 and she can get you signed up. Good luck to you with your decision.
  • Thanks for your responses.  I have talked to my doctor and she is VERY encouraging of doing a VBAC.  Besides being a good candidate (DC #1 was wrapped in the umbilical cord and never dropped so I never dilated), I am very interested in having a quick recovery so we can get home and back to DC #1.  The first time around it was fine being in the hospital for 5-6 days, but I don't want to do that again.

Thanks for the tip on the Google group.  I will PM her now. :)

Same here. My 2nd c/s was planned (yet unplanned as I went into labor 4 weeks prior to it) and it went great. They took DD as planned. I was up and walking the next day and could have even went home if I wanted too (DD was in the NICU so we stayed).

Even if I had the option I would take c/s over a VBAC.

  • I'm thinking about it. It really depends on if I have GD and have a big kid again!

Plus I am due 12/22 and selfishly want to do the c/s so I can do it a week early and be home for Xmas! Is that bad??

  • I am going to ask. Since my LO is only a year I think he will say no but I had a misserable c-section and would avoid that experience again at all cost.

  • My first section was great, and my second was absolutely horrid. I've been doing A LOT of research and am determined to try a VBAC. My first appointment with a midwife is tomorrow. We're just meeting to talk and get a feel for each other, but I also have an appointment with an OB for a month from now just incase. (the doctor supports VBAC, but not as whole heartedly as the midwife). Good Luck making your decision.

  • I would encourage you to try for a VBAC, if you are a good candidate (proper incision and time between births, etc.)  It's better for baby's health and better for mom's health.  Sure, it's more inconvienent, but you can deal with that.

We did a VBAC for my 2nd child (DS #1 was breech) and it was awesome!  Took a little planning to make sure we had coverage for DS #1 when we needed to head to the hospital (thanks, mom!) but that worked out beautifully.  I ended up doing it without drugs (was afraid that the epi would compromise my progress and result in a repeat c-s) and wouldn't hesitate to do that again.  The temporary pain of childbirth was over much quicker than my pain from a c-section.  And, we knew we wanted to have 3 kids, and I didn't want to have three c-sections.  The risks of repeat c-sections go up with each surgery.  And, yes, there is a risk of a uterine rupture with a VBAC.  I wasn't worried about that...from what I read, there are signs that the rupture is coming...it doesn't happen instantly....and since I was down the hall from an OR, I wasn't concerned for our lives.

You do need to do the research for yourself to understand if you are willing to accept the risk of a repeat c-section, or the risk of a uterine rupture.   What it REALLY comes down to in my opinion is that all types of birth are really safe.  You just need to know which is right for you.  I couldn't pass up the experience of delivering my child vaginally.  That opportunity (unless you are Michelle Duggar!) comes so few times in our lives.

    GL!!

  • I won't be trying for a VBAC. My pelvis was too small, and I labored for 48 hours with DS before I figured that out. If I could, I would though!

  • I will be doing a c-section.  My hospital will not do a vbac.  I also like the fact I can go in on a planned date have a sitter for dd (we are 2 hrs from family or anyone who could watch her) and have the baby.  I will also be getting my tubes tied after this baby so they will do it at the same time.

I'm definitely trying for a VBAC, i switched OB's and everything just so i can try.  the hospital my old ob was affiliated w/ won't perform vbacs so i had to find a brand new ob that does allow them.

they said i was a good candidate since i had a vaginal delivery before. and going thru both i never want another c/s again, if i can help it!

  • DO IT DO IT DO IT :) i had a great csection with my first don't get me wrong d/t breech but i loved my VBAC! totally different experience and i wouldn't change it for the world! 4 pushes and he was out! yes i torn but not nearly as many stitches as a csection and easier recovery with a 2 yr old at home! also i was induced so that was still an option good luck deciding!

  • Hi! I had a VBAC with my second son, and I am so glad I did. It is an experience that I really wanted to have, and I cherish it. And a definite plus for was that I was able to pick up and hug my then 1.5 year old, when he came to see me in the hospital.

If you'd like to read my birth story I can forward it to you. It's a bit long, but gives you a good idea of what I went through.

That being said, whatever you decide, remember that in the end, it doesn't matter how your baby comes out, all that really matters is that you and the baby are safe and healthy. So try not to stress/think about it too much right now, you still have time :-)

  • I need to research and talk to my dr.  After I had DS, he said he doesn't like VBACs because even though the odds are small, the risk is still there.  I don't know.  I want to experience it, but not sure.

  • I'm having a repeat VBAC. My doctor doesn't recommend VBACs and the hospital where I'm delivering doesn't do VBACs.

I will be having a repeat c/s. I have zero desire for a VBAC.  My first c/s was planned (due to GD) and went great.

  • its out of the question for me because my OB is not a fan of VBACs but if i had a choice i would attempt a VBAC. i had a vaginal birth for ds1 and obviously, the healing process is so much better and easier.

Just talked to my NP about this yesterday and will talk to my dr. about it at my next appt.  Basically I would like to try for a VBAC but I'm realistic that I may end up in repeat c.  I was induced at 40 weeks, 5 days.  36 hours of induction, never got past 3 cm.  My daughter was 9'10".  She was posterior so maybe that won't happen again.

I think it's likely my dr. will say, statistically my chances aren't great but if I want to give it a shot, she will.  My thought is, let's schedule it several days past my due date and if I go into labor great.  I don't think I can be induced again and even if I could, I don't want to.

In some ways it's hard to even have the choice I think.
