Babies: 3 - 6 Months

help me skip the night feeding!!

DD is 14wks old and STILL wont sttn :( im getting exhausted and so frustrated when i hear ALL my friends babies sttn already.

She only ever gets up once at the same time every night. 3am. Sometimes im not sure if she's even really hungry or if she's just used to getting up at this time to eat.

I've tried to let her fuss herself back to sleep but it always ends up in screaming crying. So i go in. We try the bink but it only ever works for about 20 min at a time then shes up again until she wont even take bink-- she just cries with it in her mouth. so i give in and feed her. after she eats she'll sleep until 6:30-7ish then i need to get her up for the day.

Clearly im doing something wrong. I need an outside perspective. Any tips on how to skip that feeding? what do i do when she escalates from fussing to screaming when we try to let her go and soothe herself back to sleep? how do i know if she really needs to eat, or is just so used to getting up at that time each night? Is using the bink bad?

help :(

Re: help me skip the night feeding!!

  • DS is 20 weeks and has never slept through the night - so it's really not unusual. A single feeding a night is totally normal.

We did work to stretch out the feedings, but I still nurse DS 2-3 times a night. My pedi said usually by 6 mo they start to skip those on their own. My attitude now is that I'll follow DS's cues for the time being, and we'll reassess at 6 mo.

  • well.. hate to tell you.. my DD JUST started STTN this past weekend!  Our doctor told us to keep feeding her at 3am, then stop at 6 months and start to ferberize her if she wasn't STTN yet.

we just kept feeding her.. but now that she just started rolling.. she rolls on her belly and STTN.

  • She may not be ready to loose that night feeding.  Emerson just now started not waking for a bottle just recently. I wouldn't think it's a habit at this age..she's still pretty young!  I wouldn't force it!

  • Many babies do not sleep through the night until 6 months! My DS is yet to sleep completely through the night! If she is crying in the middle of the night, there is a godo chance she is hungry. Yes, many women talk about their LOs sleeping through the night but have you noticed how many discuss theirs not STTN!? Dont you remember while you were pregnant, people saying "Get all the sleep you can now before the baby comes!"? They didnt just mean for the first couple weeks!
  • Every baby is different. I know it is hard not to compare, I am totally guilty of it as well, but try not to! You are not doing anything wrong. :) My LO just started to STTN...like 2 weeks ago. We made sure that we stuck to her bedtime routine (bath, book, feeding) and put her down to bed within the same hour every night. It seemed like all of the sudden she went from 2 feedings to 1, then when that happened we started trying to give her the pacifier instead of the feeding and after a few days it worked! Just take your time and don't rush your LO. IMO and my Pedi's it will happen when they are ready. Good luck! :)

It drives me nuts when my friends tell me their babies STTN and they're younger than my DD.

Unfortunately for me my DD does not sleep through the night. She still gets up anywhere from 2-4 times a night. I would gladly take her only waking up once a night. I've wondered the same thing you have, is she really hungry, is she just used to waking up, etc.. I'm going to talk to her Doctor on wednesday when she goes in for her 4 months appt. I honestly feel your pain. I cant wait for her to STTN.

  • It sounds like she is really hungry for that 3am feeding and I would continue to do it. Your DD is still pretty young! My DS was still waking mulitple times to eat at that age.

My DS is over 5 months and still wakes at least once to eat....if not twice or more.

  • I eliminated the night feedings by giving him the binkie instead of the bottle. He went right back to sleep when given his binkie. If LO will not take the bink, she's hungry. Feed her.

  • Um, she's hungry. Feed your baby and forgot about scheduling her sleep habits, she is still young! One night feeding is perfectly normal and appropriate.

  • thank you ladies! its good to know im n ot the only one & im not doing anything wrong. i heart the bump :)
  • I always try the paci first and when my LO wont take it and cries i end up feeding him too. I'm thinking like the PP and believe he is hungry. If he wasnt then he'd take the paci and be content. So just hang in there...i know it's tough!
