4 month wakeful?

Anyone go through this?  My mothers day present (note sarcasm) was a fun wake up call at 4:30am!  He has been STTN since he was a month old, and last night he was up every 2 hours just talking and spinning in his crib.  How long did yours last?  I guess I'm just going to have to increase my coffee intake.

  • I thought the 4 month wakeful was a myth until, at almost exactly 4 months old, Sean went from sleeping from 8:30-5:30 to waking up 2 or 3 times a night. His sleep basically went to crap after that and he is just now kind of starting to STTN again. I hope that is not happening to you!!! Good luck.

  • Ella started this at 4 months and one week; I tolerated it for about 2 weeks and then ended up doing CIO sleep training.  One suckass night, 2 sucky but tolerable nights and she's basically STTN ever since.

My doctor suggested CIO and her reasoning being that since Ella had already been STTN before that - or at least STTN, briefly waking up to eat and then going RIGHT back to sleep, this wasn't a hunger issue, but a sleep/behavioral issue.  Everyone on the Bump clutches their pearls about CIO and I get that its not for everyone, but ALOT of people end up doing it eventually and then are amazed at how easy it is.  My ped has 3 kids and also told me she waited to do it w/ LO #1 until he was 11 months old, and it sucked way worse than when she did it w/ LO#2 @ 5 months.

Get the Ferber book and at least get educated about sleep issues/sleep habits for kids.

  • I've read parts of the Ferber book and quite a few other books, and the Twelve Hours Sleep by Twelve Weeks was the one that helped us get to almost 10 hours most nights really quickly.  We go in, put the paci back in and he is back to sleep.  Whenever we have tried CIO, we said we would let him go for 2 minutes then go in and soothe him, I get knots in my stomach when I hear him cry.  I can physically feel my anxiety levels rise, so it's just something I can't handle right now.
