3rd Trimester

Sleeping - right side? left side? back?

I am having a horrible time sleeping my left side all the time - it is SO uncomfortable. My right side is the best... but sleeping in any position other than on my left side wrapped around a body pillow worries me? Am I justified? Is it ok that I roll around a lot in my sleep and wake up in all types of positions? I just started my 32 week.

Thank you!

Sleep how you are comfortable.  I can't sleep on my left and can't lie on it very long because for some reason I can't breathe very well that way.

  • my doctor said that sleeping on your side is best-- doesn't matter which side. she also said that if you wakeup on your back-- no big deal, just roll over. i have to sleep on my right because LO kicks the mattress when I sleep on my left side.
  • I sleep any way I can at this point. I even sleep on my back a little with a body pillow as a wedge so I'm not flat on my back. Your body will wake you up & tell you if you need to change positions.

  • I sleep moslty on my right side because my right ribs/back always hurt.  Then my hips and shoulder hurts so I roll to my left, but then my ribs and back hurt so I roll to my right and half on my stomach hugging my body pillow.  There's nothing wrong with sleeping on your right side.  I can't sleep on my back anymore because I have trouble breathing, and obviously stomach sleeping is out, but any other position that allows you to sleep is fine.
  • I don't think there's anything wrong with it.  I talked to my doctor about it since I sleep the same way, all over the place.  He said that left side is best but you will wake up before you harm the baby in any way.  I find that right side sleeping is most comfortable, so he said to place a pillow under your side, it will take the pressure off the artery on your right side.

  • All of the above! I sleep on my back sometimes too - just propped up with a lot of pillows.

I basically sleep with 3 pillows AND a snoogle and rearrange them several times a night to get comfortable. But when I sleep - I sleep like the dead. So at least readjusting every few hours isn't affecting me much the next morning.

  • I sleep on whatever side feels most comfortable.  If you're concerned about blood flow, place a pillow under your hip to take pressure off of your vena cava.

  • I sleep in many different positions - really, anything other than on my stomach obviously.  As long as the position doesn't give me wicked heartburn, I'm in it.

I'm the same way, when I lay on my left side I feel like I cant breath, weird...my right side is  much more comfy.

I'm a little over 30 weeks and still sleeping on my stomach (thanks to a fun arrangement of pillows).  With DS I managed to mostly stomach sleep until after my 34th week.  My midwife always told me to sleep however I could make the sleep come, she said that your body would let you know the position wasn't working by making you uncomfortable long before there could be any harm at all to baby.  I say sleep how you can!

  • Thanks everyone! This makes me feel much better - and maybe I will actually get some sleep tonight instead of worrying the night thru. I'm wondering if lack of sleep is causing how I have been feeling - the past couple days I have been feeling slightly light headed, occasionally dizzy, sluggish; sorta like I have a bad cold/flu symptoms.

  • I end up on my back for the majority of most nights...my arms fall asleep constantly in other positions...so far I haven't noticed any issues
  • I still sleep on my back almost all night. Sleep however you are comfortable and your body will let you know if there's something wrong.
