Postpartum Depression

PP Panic

I think I may have some type of anxiety or panic disorder. I had a really bad attack when LO was 4 weeks old. It started as a gallbladder attack and when they pain subsided and started to come back I think I had a panic attack because I thought I was having a heart attack or that some blod clot had started to make its way into my lungs and I was going to die. I couldn't breathe and my husband called 911. As soon as the EMTs got there and started oxygen the pain disappeared. I was taken in to the the hospital to make sure it wasn't a blod clot and it turned out I did have gallstones so they removed my gallbladder. No one ever investigated the chest pain I was having, it got brushed aside. Since then I sometimes get this pain that starts in my stomach and my right shoulder and it feels like I can't breath very well, and that the pain is going to shoot through my chest. If I start to breathe through my nose very deeply it stops but for that few minutes it is very scary. The timing is normally when I am agitated by something or the environment changes quickly. For example, we took LO to the pedi's office and for once it was really quiet. Out of nowhere the family with 4 crazy kids come in, followed by a little girl who was screaming because she cut her forehead open. I started to get these chest pains and had to leave so I could calm down.

I am not sure whether I should see my normal family doctor, or if this is a matter for the OB?

Start with a call to your ob. I had anxiety attacks where I couldn't my breath at times and really thought I was going to die. I was put on Lexapro which was a God send for me.

  • I've been on lexapro for four years.  I just started taking Xanax XR on top of the lexapro to help with PPA.  I would call my OB and ask if they can diagnose you or if you need to talk to a specialist.  My OB gave me the xanax prescription, but I don't know if all OB's would...

  • I would talk to your OB, but a lot of people having a gallbladder attack actually feel like they're having a heart attack (I used to be an ER nurse.) Gallbladder pain also tends to radiate into the right shoulder, and not everyone has it go away after the surgery. So I would also talk to the surgeon who took out your gallbladder.

I hope you get things figured out soon, sounds frustrating and scary for you.
