A less expensive alternative to puffs?

Is it just me or are Gerber puffs and their other snacks way overpriced?  The little girl I watch is older than DS and she eats them.  I was in the store the other day and noticed that a little 1 oz or so package of the yogurt melts was like $3.  Are they made out of gold or what?  Yet, they seem to be the only brand I know who makes something like that.  Does anyone know of any other snacks made that are similar, yet not so expensive?  There's cheerios of course, but anything else?  I'm thinking maybe honeycombs cereal or Kix.

  • I've never had problems finding store-brand puffs. Try Target - they have tons of flavors.

And yeah, the yogurt melts are a rip-off big time.

  • Target makes their own version.
  • Target has their own brand as well as Walmart. I have tried both and they taste the same as Gerber to me.
  • We use cereal and the generic brands of puffs and yogurt melts.  Target makes them.

  • BRU often has sales of 3 for $5.

  • Walmart has a generic version of puffs too.  DS doesn't really care for the yogurt melts...we still have a couple packages of those I might return.  But he goes crazy over the puffs!

  • We do cheerios.

  • Cheerios.  I also give DS reduced salt rice cakes instead of mum-mums.
  • Theres an Organic Brand of Puffs that our BRU carries .... it's about the same price as the Gerber ones but a BIGGER canister.  Target has some too. As for the yogurt drops .... I hear ya! So they only get them occasionally as a "treat"
  • Thanks for the tips.  I had no idea there were store brands out there.  I was at a grocery store.  I've never looked in a Target or Walmart.

    Same here :)

  • We do cheerios now... I like the price a lot better and I think there is less sugar in the cheerios. =)

  • We do oyster crackers. He loves 'em. They're bigger, of course, but he really loves 'em.

  • I keep raisins in DS diaper bag. His pedi recommended hem for constipation and he loves them. Now he gets them as a snack and before almost every meal.
  • We buy Target unless the Gerber are on sale, like this week at BRU. Honestly though the Target ones seem to have cooler flavors like PEach mango.

I also buy cherrios or trader Joes O's since they are only $1.99 a box.

I would have thought rasins would be a choking hazard. Hmm... I will have to try them (cut up though).

  • You could always skip the pre-packaged, over-processed and over-priced foods entirely

  • I thought so too, but I gave them to DS and watched him like a hawk. I cut them in half at first, but now he eats them whole. He LOVES them.

TMI:   BTW, they come out whole too, but a little plumper, almost like grapes. Its kinda weird.

    Good to know and LOL!!!

  • Another snack idea is Fig-newtons! DD loves them and they are super soft!
  • I do buy them when they are on sale and I have coupons, but we also do Kix (he loves them!), cheerios, and mum-mums.

  • If you go to Sam's Club, they have a pack of 6 bottles of puffs for $5.
  • Kix are awesome. Awesome! A box lasts forever and is less expensive then one package of puffs.

Do you have a helpful answer in addition to this? Or is this all we're getting?

  • We just use cheerios.  Way cheaper, and I don't like the idea of having to buy him special food. I made all his babyfood, and no that he is starting to eat finger foods and more table food like stuff, he eats what we eat, within reason.
