teething question

This is a hard thing to describe/ask, but here it goes...

I've had a feeling for a while now that Emma is teething early. She has her hands in her mouth constantly, drools like a beast, and seems to get fussy and uncomfortable for no apparent reason from time to time. Now MIL sees something on her top gums that she SWEARS are teeth.

The best way I can describe what she has is that it's two areas on her top gum, where her two top teeth would be, that are white-ish...lighter than the rest of the gum. But the reason I'm not so sure is that it's not in the area of the gum where the teeth would actually come out of...it's actually on the front part of the gum that directly touches her inner top lip. Not the part of the gum that touches her bottom gums. Does that make sense?! Anyway, I always thought that the first sign of the tooth would come along the part of the gumline, either on the top or the bottom, that actually touches the other gumline when the baby "chews." If what my mother in law is seeing are really her teeth, it looks like they would be coming sideways out of her gum towards her lips, which makes zero sense to me and would actually be pretty freaky. I think what she's seeing is just how Emma's gums are naturally shaped and colored. Not to mention the fact that I think it would be pretty rare for her top teeth to come out before her bottom teeth.

So...have you guys ever seen anything like that? Does my description even make sense? Do you think those could really be teeth that are about to sprout?

Re: teething question

  • Althugh I cannot help you on what you see.  I can tell you and Isabella is doing the exact thing.  Everything goes into her mouth, she drools like crazy, and gets cranky for no reason. So GL!!! Let us know if they are teeth.
  • Loading the player...
  • both my boys got their first teeth at 5 months so it's not early + some babies can teeth for MONTHS before ever getting teeth. Maybe someone will chime in here but I've enver seen a kid get their top teeth befor egetting their bottoms ones :)

  • Sorry I didn't have time to read whole thing but yes, white strip should be teeth coming out. That's how Abraham's gums get when they're goin to break through! GL:)

  • Nico is acting the same as Emma. Jorge swore up and down that Nico was teething a couple of weeks ago because his gums were whitish, not on the top where the tooth pops out of, but on the front- the side that touches the inside of his lips. Is this the same place you mean? This happened on the bottom though not the top. Well, now his gum is swollen there. You can see too little bumps kind of in the shape of teeth and the top of his gum where his left tooth will be is now white. I think it's going to break through soon.

EXACTLY. If they ARE teeth, they look like they are closer to the surface of the gum in the front part where the gum touches the inner lip...but I don't see anything yet near the surface of the part of the gum that touches the other gum. The only thing is she has it on the top gums, not on the bottom gums...

On the bottom gums, in the regular place you would expect the tooth to come out of (i.e., the part of the bottom gum that lines up with the top gum...what she would use if she were to bite something), she has a little white spot that might be a tooth too. It kind of looks like a "pellejito" if that makes sense (not sure what to call that in Spanish).

What a mystery! I guess we'll find out soon enough...

  • They most definitely could be teeth.  My daughter didn't get her 1st tooth until like 7-8 months but my son got his first at 3.5 months.

If she's jamming her fist in her mouth and drooling like crazy, those are the signs.. :)  You could give her a frozen washcloth to "chew" on they are usually easier than the toys that they have..

  • Benjamin is doing the same thing for what seems like a month now...fussy.....both hands in the mouth at all times and he's beginning to chew on my breast (fun, right?) I see a teeny tiny white spot on the bottom gum...but he won't let me look at it long enough to really see what's going on.

I think those teeth will be in in the next few weeks, Jen! I agree with the cold washcloths or rubbing your finger along her gumline.
